Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys Open Thread
Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys, Oct 25, 2009 4:15 PM EDT
Normally I'd say something pithy and relevant up here, but I've got what feels like a battalion of armed germs lodged in my throat and a long day ahead of me, so I'm afraid this will have to do. This should be one hell of a game, though!
Keep it hopping in the game thread all afternoon, and if I'm functioning on even the most basic level, I'll see you there.
What? Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys, 4:15 ET
Where? Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas
Weather? Everything's bigger in Texas, so expect a sun which looms overhead and scorches the earth. Truck-sized raindrops are only a slight possibility.
Fun Fact? We've only faced the Cowboys three times since 2001, but we've beaten them twice. That's fun, right?
Injuries? Ovie Mughelli is still questionable, while Michael Turner is banged up but ready to go. Both William Moore and Jerious Norwood are doubtful. Antoine Harris is out once again.
Everyone on the Cowboy injury report is probable, so you'll probably see the lot of them. Little more concerned about our end of things.
Odds? Dallas over Atlanta 4.5, O/U 48.0
Foe? If you haven't already been visiting, check out Blogging The Boys, where Cowboys fans will be hanging out through the day. Play nice, kiddos.
GO FALCONS! Let's wrangle these Cowboys!

New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.
Why are we getting so many teams after their bye week?
Still , not an excuse, but being well rested has to be to your advantage, imo
Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
Good job Falcons.
Way to make a worse team look better than you.
The defense played about 3 series, then decided to go home. The offense has had several decent drives stopped by stupidity. When you go 4 games without a sack and then start giving up sacks, something is wrong.
That last DAL play shows exactly why we will lose unless some changes are made. Absolutely pathetic tackling. Also, 3rd and 7 and you rush 4 guys on a day when your pass rush isn’t there? Come on.
This feels reminiscent of the old Falcons. This really does.
Dallas gets the bye to rest and we have to play at their dome
Someone is working against us
The only thing I'll say to that...
Is that these schedules were made several years ago, long before anyone knew we’d be any good.
So we can’t really blame that. If we were still a 4 win team, we wouldn’t care so much about it. But realistically, it does screw us a bit.
I thought the schedule comes out at the beginning of the year
Thats why have to wait so long till we know who we are playing
it comes out after the playoffs/SB

One thing I've noticed...
Is that, this year at least, the teams that are winning are starting a faster tailback who runs with some determination.
I have not seen one Turner run this year that would suggest he’s running with determination. Ok, I could count them on one hand, but do you see what I’m getting at?
We need a back who runs with some urgency, like Norwood. But he’s hurt, so we can’t use him. We really need him more than most people think.
I can't think of one
Aside from Jahvid Best, that would be worth looking at.
That being said, I follow pro ball more than I do college ball.
We cannot run the ball at all even after that gain.........
New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.
Well, based on what I've seen this year
We can’t trust Turner to get 2 yards anymore, and that’s sad.

Why is it that whenever we get into the Redzone we get great pushes...
But we cannot run the ball anywhere else on the field….
New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.
Maybe our team...
is full of werewolves, and they think the endzone is their victim. We have one of the best red zone percentages in the league, but I couldn’t tell ya why we run it better there. Maybe the passing threats become too much to handle along with the run game.

I'm noticing a trend.
The Saints are beginning to claw their way back to the Fins’ lead, as we are trying to do the same as well.
My thoughts exactly

The Stat of the Game, so far:
Dallas Passing yards: 237
Dallas Rushing Yards: 32 (before that 9 yard run.)
So far, we’ve played to have Romo beat us through the air by concentrating on their running game.
The crappy part about it is, he is beating us through the air.
With our pathetic secondary you'd think we'd have it the other way round.
New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.
Yeah, you would think.
Who knows. I’m beginning to wonder if VanGorder is gonna be shown the door, soon.
What the heck? Tackle

Teamjust isn’t on.
New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.
Well,...
Chalk this one up to another crappy offensive showing and giving up big plays on defense. May be Hill will be ready to play next year.
I am going to hear about this tomorrow
Everyone my office is a stupid Cowboys fan
Just tell them
that when we see them in the playoffs, we won’t send our 3rd stringers in our starters jerseys out that game.
The problem.
Well, if we do indeed lose this game, which we could still win (wishful thinking)…
I think we need to identify the problem. Each team we beat ends up playing like hell afterwards (see CHI, SF, CAR, MIA, aka our 4 wins.) First, we need to identify why that is, whether the teams we’ve beaten were actually bad or if we beat them so badly that they just couldn’t show up the weeks afterwards.
Second, we need to find out what is wrong with our D. Our defense today has looked lost. An anemic pass rush at best coupled with an apparently miserable secondary = failure. But what is it about our D that is going wrong? Is it scheme? Is it mental? Is it a lack of talent? Is it the DC that everyone seems to dislike?
Third, WHERE IN THE (insert obscenities here) has our run game gone? This team used to pride itself in being one of the best running teams in the NFL, even when they weren’t winning as many games. We have one of the more talented backs in the NFL in Turner, who has looked uninspired or maybe even tired ALL YEAR LONG. It can’t possibly be the O-Line, which has done a great job in pass protection this year for the most part. I suppose it could be the O-Line, but how do you fix that? And even if it was the O-Line, how would that be possible? It’s the same O-Line as last year, pretty much.
What I’m saying is, for weeks now I’ve been wanting to perch the Birds up with the elite teams of the NFL because I’ve felt we’ve been really close to that. However, we’re clearly missing something, but I couldn’t tell you what it is. Heck, it could even be the refs, for all I know. I’ve seen some pretty terrible no-calls, today.
After watching this performance, I have to take the little Bird figure down and put it to the side. I wouldn’t feel as bad about all this if Gonzalez wasn’t at the end of his career.
I think that's only our 3rd penalty
but all three have killed us. If the O was firing on all cylinders, I wouldn’t be so concerned, but now that we’ve been stymied, I don’t know.
Our screener is out cold.
A FB screen is nice, but just doesn’t have the same explosive/elusive value that Norwood gives.
game over

Finally we wake up from the wonderful dream. I think everyone here has been overestimating this team. We simply are not that good a football team. I always envisioned this as a lose.

on the road, playing a team coming off of a bye. and we’re beat up with several starters sidelined with injury..

I dont think I am quite frankly
Think about it no run game at all this year and Ryan finally gets a bit of pressure. Our offense is in pieces and other teams will now key on these obvious weaknesses.
New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.
Well, this just went from bad to worse.
Complete breakdown from a game we could’ve just as easily won.
Why punt it in that situation? You’re already down 2 scores, if you don’t make it, who cares?
So much cowardice in the NFL these days. TMQ should be our offensive coordinator.
good call zippo
That decision will surely go in the “Buck, buck brawkkk” section of TMQ this week.Especially with the punt return and the way our defense had been playing up to that point.
Dumbdounded.

I don't think they're better at all, except defensively to a degree.
But in a league where any given team can win at any time, if you don’t show up, you get punished. Our team was punished today by a (in my opinion) lesser team. However, the lesser team, coming off their byte week fully healthy, is playing at home against us, a team plagued with injury bug. It sucks, but it happens. Best just to try to bounce back next week against the Saints.
Well at least the Saints and Vikings lost too..
We should be ready for a big game Monday nite but we have to find a way to pressure Brees or we will get blown out just like this game..
saints haven't lost yet

I liked Brooking a lot when he was with us, but he’s been acting like a grade-a jackhole all day for no real good reason. What’s he got, one tackle?
At the risk of being pelted with stuff

There's still time left, but 2 more scores is too much to overcome
Unless a truly unheard of miracle were to occur.
Most depressing thing-
I’m agreeing with Aikman. They need to figure out what the hell the problem is on offense.
i think the 'boys cheerleaders

A 16-point game now
The Saints have over 8 minutes to play, wonder if Fox will cut away when this ends?
Meanwhile...
The Saints are about to go ahead. Saw THAT coming!
That’s the only one of my picks that’s looking good right now! I aced the early games, and if the Saints win, that’s the only one I’ll get in the afternoon ones. Sigh.
One thing we're missing
is some big plays on offense. On paper, this offense should be excellent. Obviously, games aren’t won on paper, but we should be doing better than this. This is garbage. We just trucked down the field and had a free (almost undefensed) touchdown. Where’s that been all game long?
I don’t think we take enough risks. Roddy White is a good enough receiver to take some chances with.
Int on the first play by ryan
why is he even in there.

No realistic chance to win
You’re gambling with your franchise QB there. Dallas loves the head shots today, too.
I think we're missing a few things
One thing that separates this team from the elites is exactly what you’re seeing from the Saints today. When they got down by a lot, they went extremely aggressive and their defense clamped down. When we get down by a lot, we just kind of curl up in a ball, it seems.

Why take your field general off the battlefield in a losing battle?
Sometimes, not quitting (as in pulling the starters) is the best thing you can do for a team.

Look on the (admittedly small) bright side.
We have a team capable of beating both of their teams and we lost to both on the road.
We had a chance to beat the Pats and threw the game away. This game, well, I’m not sure we were ever in it. The first drive was deceiving, to say the least.

4-2 isn't bad.
And, we haven’t lost twice in a row under Mike Smith.
I’d be willing to bet the players are gonna be running gassers in the parking lot after this one, and deservedly so.

Hope the coaches were paying attention
We’ve played two good teams this year and had our collective butts handed to us.
Offensively – running game is in trouble. Snelling ran well but should have had more carries. In typical fashion so far this year, when the running game is off the pass plays slowly work their way closer to the line of scrimage. I didn’t see many deep passes to keep the safeties guessing. There seems to be some issues with the first and second down play calling also.
Defensively – played very well against the run, again. Moving JA has paid dividends there. The pass rush is still having problems even when there are blitzes. Grimes is a great athlete and plays hard but he’s too small against guys like Austin. Might need to play him at nickel back and get Hill into the game.
Even the Special Teams had a collapse today. Not a good sign going to NO.
