Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys Open Thread

Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys, Oct 25, 2009 4:15 PM EDT

Normally I'd say something pithy and relevant up here, but I've got what feels like a battalion of armed germs lodged in my throat and a long day ahead of me, so I'm afraid this will have to do. This should be one hell of a game, though!

Keep it hopping in the game thread all afternoon, and if I'm functioning on even the most basic level, I'll see you there.

What? Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys, 4:15 ET

Where? Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Weather? Everything's bigger in Texas, so expect a sun which looms overhead and scorches the earth. Truck-sized raindrops are only a slight possibility.

Fun Fact? We've only faced the Cowboys three times since 2001, but we've beaten them twice. That's fun, right?

Injuries? Ovie Mughelli is still questionable, while Michael Turner is banged up but ready to go. Both William Moore and Jerious Norwood are doubtful. Antoine Harris is out once again.

Everyone on the Cowboy injury report is probable, so you'll probably see the lot of them. Little more concerned about our end of things.

Odds? Dallas over Atlanta 4.5, O/U 48.0

Foe? If you haven't already been visiting, check out Blogging The Boys, where Cowboys fans will be hanging out through the day. Play nice, kiddos.

GO FALCONS! Let's wrangle these Cowboys!

Good job Falcons.

Way to make a worse team look better than you.

The defense played about 3 series, then decided to go home. The offense has had several decent drives stopped by stupidity. When you go 4 games without a sack and then start giving up sacks, something is wrong.

That last DAL play shows exactly why we will lose unless some changes are made. Absolutely pathetic tackling. Also, 3rd and 7 and you rush 4 guys on a day when your pass rush isn’t there? Come on.

This feels reminiscent of the old Falcons. This really does.

by Zippo729 on Oct 25, 2009 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

The only thing I'll say to that...

Is that these schedules were made several years ago, long before anyone knew we’d be any good.

So we can’t really blame that. If we were still a 4 win team, we wouldn’t care so much about it. But realistically, it does screw us a bit.

One thing I've noticed...

Is that, this year at least, the teams that are winning are starting a faster tailback who runs with some determination.

I have not seen one Turner run this year that would suggest he’s running with determination. Ok, I could count them on one hand, but do you see what I’m getting at?

We need a back who runs with some urgency, like Norwood. But he’s hurt, so we can’t use him. We really need him more than most people think.

Dolphins 27-17

if it makes anyone feel better.

by tom slick on Oct 25, 2009 6:46 PM EDT reply actions

The problem.

Well, if we do indeed lose this game, which we could still win (wishful thinking)…

I think we need to identify the problem. Each team we beat ends up playing like hell afterwards (see CHI, SF, CAR, MIA, aka our 4 wins.) First, we need to identify why that is, whether the teams we’ve beaten were actually bad or if we beat them so badly that they just couldn’t show up the weeks afterwards.

Second, we need to find out what is wrong with our D. Our defense today has looked lost. An anemic pass rush at best coupled with an apparently miserable secondary = failure. But what is it about our D that is going wrong? Is it scheme? Is it mental? Is it a lack of talent? Is it the DC that everyone seems to dislike?

Third, WHERE IN THE (insert obscenities here) has our run game gone? This team used to pride itself in being one of the best running teams in the NFL, even when they weren’t winning as many games. We have one of the more talented backs in the NFL in Turner, who has looked uninspired or maybe even tired ALL YEAR LONG. It can’t possibly be the O-Line, which has done a great job in pass protection this year for the most part. I suppose it could be the O-Line, but how do you fix that? And even if it was the O-Line, how would that be possible? It’s the same O-Line as last year, pretty much.

What I’m saying is, for weeks now I’ve been wanting to perch the Birds up with the elite teams of the NFL because I’ve felt we’ve been really close to that. However, we’re clearly missing something, but I couldn’t tell you what it is. Heck, it could even be the refs, for all I know. I’ve seen some pretty terrible no-calls, today.

After watching this performance, I have to take the little Bird figure down and put it to the side. I wouldn’t feel as bad about all this if Gonzalez wasn’t at the end of his career.

by Zippo729 on Oct 25, 2009 6:47 PM EDT reply actions

I think that's only our 3rd penalty

but all three have killed us. If the O was firing on all cylinders, I wouldn’t be so concerned, but now that we’ve been stymied, I don’t know.

I don't think they're better at all, except defensively to a degree.

But in a league where any given team can win at any time, if you don’t show up, you get punished. Our team was punished today by a (in my opinion) lesser team. However, the lesser team, coming off their byte week fully healthy, is playing at home against us, a team plagued with injury bug. It sucks, but it happens. Best just to try to bounce back next week against the Saints.

One thing we're missing

is some big plays on offense. On paper, this offense should be excellent. Obviously, games aren’t won on paper, but we should be doing better than this. This is garbage. We just trucked down the field and had a free (almost undefensed) touchdown. Where’s that been all game long?

I don’t think we take enough risks. Roddy White is a good enough receiver to take some chances with.

One thing that separates this team from the elites is exactly what you’re seeing from the Saints today. When they got down by a lot, they went extremely aggressive and their defense clamped down. When we get down by a lot, we just kind of curl up in a ball, it seems.

Hope the coaches were paying attention

We’ve played two good teams this year and had our collective butts handed to us.

Offensively – running game is in trouble. Snelling ran well but should have had more carries. In typical fashion so far this year, when the running game is off the pass plays slowly work their way closer to the line of scrimage. I didn’t see many deep passes to keep the safeties guessing. There seems to be some issues with the first and second down play calling also.

Defensively – played very well against the run, again. Moving JA has paid dividends there. The pass rush is still having problems even when there are blitzes. Grimes is a great athlete and plays hard but he’s too small against guys like Austin. Might need to play him at nickel back and get Hill into the game.

Even the Special Teams had a collapse today. Not a good sign going to NO.
