Whew! We got lucky.
After a lack luster performance by our offense, I'm not very confident in this season. The Bears basically beat themselves last night , not the Falcons. The running game was non-existent and the passing TDs were a result of complete blown coverages by the Bears. We had one decent drive--that's it. If the Bears only made half the plethora of self destroying mistakes, Falcons lose by at least 10 points--at home. Not good. We should've won by at least two touchdowns after all the gifts given to us. I dont think the Saints will be that generous.. Quite frankly, if we continued like that, we'll not only get killed by the Saints but we wont make the playoffs

I think that might be too gloomy
Yes, we could’ve and perhaps should’ve hung more points on the Bears, but we won tough. You’re not going to see too many teams outside of the Eagles and maybe the Saints who have the presence up front to throw our passing game off like that.
I’m still optimistic.

Dude - step away from the ledge.....
It’s the NFL. The Bears are a pretty good team and the Falcons played well enough to win and did. I agree that the Bears aren’t as good as the Saints, but is any team as good as the Saints right now?
I’ve had season tickets for the past 7 years and last night was the most full I have seen the Dome for a Falcons game. It was loud and electric and the Falcons won a home game against an NFL foe.
Enjoy it.

Bye Weeks
Remember how good the 49ers defense was? Remember what the falcons did to it? While i’m not saying that the offense isn’t good, but bye weeks allow teams to concentrate on one opponent more than usual. The fact that the falcons won that game shows how strong of a team they are. Unfortunately, they also have to play something like 4 teams coming off their bye. Something tells me the will be ok.
Nervous
I was so nervous I was playing this football game on facebook………kinda like NTN…… its pretty cool check it out

While the offense did have problems, you are giving no credit at all to the Falcons defense. DeCoud made a great play on the first pick. Forte didn’t fumble the ball at the goal on his own, it was forced by a great hit and penetration into the backfield. Tackling was as sound as it has ever been-I can recall only one play with a missed tackle. The offense was not sharp, but the defense played lights out.

this
i started to write a reply and found i was parroting SG.. one thing i would add. BVG dropped JA98 back on the last play to take away the middle. it was a smart call and probably kept the game out of OT.. it wasn’t a bad pass by cutler, it was the passing lane being taken away. bears were beat.
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. - Bill Shankly

um, we won the game
Sometimes you just have to do what it takes to win the game. I think that our team is better than what they played last night (see the SF game last week) but that we are not quite the top tier team yet. I still think that we are going to have a winning season but I did lower my expectations after the NE game, so I know what you are thinking/feeling after this one. I was there and I have to tell you that I never thought for one second that we were going to lose. You could see it in the guys on the field. As scary as our D is right now, they won it for us last night. No doubt. The games when both O and D play at their best are the games we will domnate. When one side of the team struggles, the other will just have to pick them up. If they cant or dont, then you wont win. Its that simple.

wow
I don’t call 2 turnovers and a 4th down stop, all in the redzone, lucky. We turned the ball over too so you could say they were lucky to only lose by 7. IMO we have the ultimate bend, don’t break defense just like last year and so far this year. One other thing, how good has our D looked since putting JA98 at DT? Freaking fantastic!!!

What he said …
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

are you a falcons fan or a bears fan...?
come on man!!!!!
Have a little optimism !!
I think the key to our struggles against the bears was the turnovers! The offense looked great in the no huddle. And our problems on defense were giving up the big pass plays (because we sent 8 man blitz’s).
Yes the saints will be tough. But our defense is far greater than I expected it to be, and Jamal Anderson looked great at DT!
Lighten up…. we are 4-1

What do you mean we got lucky?!?
the bears were lucky to be able to keep the game close; what are you a crappy saints fan? show some respect for our defense!
Not everyone has to be an optimist
Take the argument on its merits, certainly, but let’s not try to lump him with fans of other teams. You would’ve been forced to do the same thing to me during the Year that was Petrino.

I'm not trying to be "too optomistic"
I’m just trying to excite the rest of us for next week against Dallas
That wasn't directed at anyone in particular
Just saying let’s not try to change his mind. Hopefully the Falcons will do that for us.

Way too gloomy
Both teams made mistakes. The Falcons did not play a perfect game, and barely come through. Both teams were 3-1 and top wild card contenders. Not too mention we lost Williams, who was our top corner. Sure, we won’t beat the Saints or Giants playing like this, but I have confidence in the coaching staff that they will do their job and get us ready for next week.
Our defense has been playing some great football this season. We have an extremely young secondary, who can only get better with the experience they will gain with Williams out. If Williams can come back from this and still play at the same level, we will be that much better next year. Maybe shoot for a good tall cb in the draft next year. I think this is the #1 priority, and should be done in the first round. Grimes plays 3 inches taller than he is, but sometimes, it just isn’t enough. Keep him for the shorter receivers.
The linebacking core has been solid all year. Forcing fumbles and even getting an INT. Look at one play last night. I think it was Lofton, even though the ball hit the ground, it was hard to tell from his angle. So he went after it and thought he had the INT and ran it back. That’s just plain old hustle. Shoot for a project LB that Peterson can mentor over the next few years.
The D-Line has its pros and cons. They are getting pressure, but just aren’t getting there fast enough. Need some more quality depth to keep everyone fresh and able to play at their top level. Especially when playing pass happy teams, can’t keep Abraham and Beirmann in their all night long, especially when we are losing time of possession, and expect them to get a couple sacks. The run stopping sunday night looked amazing though. No big holes, pursuit, great tackling, and they adjusted quickly to a new rb. Get a pass rushing DE in the draft to give Abe and Beirmann a rest, 2nd or 3rd round.
Offense, Turner needs to stop fumbling, that’s 4 straight games now. i think he had 4 fumbles all last year. First interception was overthrown, possibly a miscommunication or just a bad throw. Second interception, jenkins dropped pass. I think he had another drop or two in that game that were just ugly. And just in general a bad day for Ryan, it happens, but he has to bounce back, i think he will.
The running game. Well, teams are going to keep stacking the box on us. I said a few weeks ago that unless we get big plays, they are going to keep doing it. Look what happened last week. A couple big plays to the receivers and Turner has 97 yards and and 3TDs. Having Norwood injured again doesn’t help. I think they should let him go this year, and shoot for a 2nd or 3rd round RB choice. Get a good speedy guy who doesn’t get injured every other week. That’s really all we need on offense. The Oline has been healthy, so I don’t know about their backups.
I mentioned some things about the draft, I’m not dismissing this season, but I think a lot of things were overlooked in the off season because they had such a healthy 08 year. Our drafts are all injured, or released.
I think if no one else gets injured, we can go anywhere from 10-6 to 13-3, with at least a second wild-card spot, more than likely the top wild-card spot.
