Playoff Open Thread: Atlanta Falcons at Arizona Cardinals
This is it, guys. Everything the Falcons have worked so hard for comes down to this. Lose and go home with a successful season under our belts and a general sense of satisfaction. Win and continue a season that's been so magical that it makes Merlin like a boring old fart.
I'll be here with you guys to talk game, so hopefully you'll all show up. We've got a million angles to talk about, but hopefully the really important one comes to the forefront: the win. It should be a great game, either way.
If you want to see what Cardinals fans are up to, check out my good friends over at Revenge Of The Birds.
GO FALCONS!!!!!!

Davis starting at DE?
Hmm … might be an upgrade.

Since my team is not playing in January, this is my adopted team to root for.
Good luck to you guys, I think you can beat the Cardinals.
So does WHAT IF SPORTS.
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
NBC
is anti-falcons… I swear – maybe it’s the cardinals that are hurting our press coverage
“so how about those falcons?”
“yeah, the colts look really good!”
Everybody is
Nobody respects us. They talk about what we’ve done, but there’s always this element of doubt. Screw ’em.
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."

Guys, you have to realize that the Cardinals are the hot pick every year
They’ll be so biased towards Arizona and it’s unfortunate.
Pete Prisco of Sportsline picked the Cardinals to win 15 out of 16 times in the regular season and he picked them to win the NFC West 4 years in a row.
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
it's alright
it took like 10 weeks before the Falcons ever started to get picked to win games – but I think our record speaks for itself.
Best quote ever about sportswriters
From SI.com…
Norm Van Brocklin, former NFL quarterback and coach and now a pecan farmer in Social Circle, Ga., describing the brain surgery he underwent two years ago: “It was a brain transplant. I got a sportswriter’s brain so I could be sure I had one that hadn’t been used.”
you aren't missing much right now
they have the ex-president of the Lions talking about how good a job everybody else has been doing this season that aren’t Lions
the raiders
were also picked to beat the falcons earlier in the season
these guys are brilliant, they are so accurate, why watch the game?
What's up Falcoholics?
Let’s get this party started. We are in the playoffs so let’s show ‘em we belong. Don’t worry about the talking heads, let’s make our points on the field. Why not us?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
I saw a stat...
Falcons are 3-6 on road in playoffs:
Win ’91 New Orleans
Win ’98 Minnesota
Win ’02 Green Bay
Loss ’91 Washington
Loss ’02 Philadelphia
Loss ’04 Philadelphia
Which ones did I miss? Thanks
And yes...
unlike Gators, I do know football was played before 1990

Michael Vick went to prison? Why didn't I know this earlier?
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
You must not get a healthy dose of ESPN
Did you know Brett Favre retired last year then unretired and went to New York?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
NOOOOOOO!!! That happened? You see, these are the things that should be on the news.
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
Time to kick it off, gents
Looks like we’re going to be on the defensive side of the ball first. Let’s get to Warner and hopefully he’ll put the ball on the turf.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Great pressure on second down too
I’m liking Van Gorder’s strategy thusfar.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Whenever I see Warner I think about Patrick Kerney's 4 sack performance last year.
And now he’s getting pressured today.
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
Now in Atlanta territory at the 48, you can't watch the game?
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
What the hell?
I thought a running game was a mystery in the desert.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Chris Houston didn't even bother to look for the ball at the last moment.
Seattle, the world's worst sports city.
That was covered about as well as it could be
Give props to Fitzgerald.

All Fitzgerald catches are great catches.
No worries though, still early.

cowboys fan here
but i like matt ryan and have alot of family in atl
so im rooting for the falcons
Superbowl or Bust?
Don't get down folks
It’s 7 points with like 10 minutes left in the 1st quarter. Lots of time for good things to happen.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Hi DI HO
Looks like it could be long hard fight today
This is why I don't go to NFL games anymore
I hate the NFL formula of kickoff, TV time out, 3 and out, TV timeout, scoring drive, TV timeout, player hurt, extended TV time out. I’d honestly rather watch an NFL game from home.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
I can use the money elsewhere, too
Used to pay $70 per season ticket for a whole year back in my younger days.
Ryan needs to settle down
And we need to put some points on the board. The Cardinals are going to pass all day long.
way too many commercials
cards d-line is really good but screens and counters can well counter them
and then the passing game should open up for jenkins & white
Superbowl or Bust?
Colts fan here
Just settling down watching your team before our big wildcard match. Not looking good for you guys, but stranger things have happened in the playoffs.
Are you serious....
How was that not offsides on the defense??? What a BS non-call.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
arizona
has barely any fans and they finally get a home playoff game
the refs r giving them some slack
Superbowl or Bust?
I think they borrowed Dallas' defense and dressed them in Arizona jerseys
That’s my only explanation thusfar. Didn’t this team give up 50 to New England 2 weeks ago?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
this
game kind of reminds of the chicago game where, matt was called to make the plays.
Not the way I wanted this game to start
Ryan gets sacked. Our O-line needs to get their stuff together quick.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
As they replay the obvious offsides
Ryan gets sacked. I feel like Wile E. Coyote holding up the little parasol before impact.
Man the way this Arizona defense is playing right now
it reminds me of the ’06 Colts. Of course the game is not over, but for the time being…
I'm afraid this is a possession that we must get a stop on
I fear our team is kinda like Alabama. Power running, but once we get multiple scores behind don’t have the firepower to get back in it. I hope I’m wrong.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Colinsworth just said it best
Are we sure the Falcons and Cardinals didn’t switch uniforms?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
im actually impressed with the cardinals
that they’re running it more than they ever do
edgerrin isn’t too good he’ll get u 3 yards when u need 3 and 3 when u need 5
Superbowl or Bust?
I'm going to say it
It’s early, but we look like shit. This team needs to start playing like it’s the playoffs.
This team needs to show something soon
Arizona came out to play and we just look lackadaisacal.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
maybe the cardinals
have been slacking and purposefully playing like crap the last few weeks because their division is a joke and they’re gonna explode in the playoffs
part of their master plan
Superbowl or Bust?
That's a big stop
Well, we got 94 yards to go. I hope our O-line can block better this drive than the last one.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Can we not block their DE's today?
On both sacks they’ve run right by our tackles.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
the cards' d-line is really good
atl needs to start some screens
its been killing them all year
Superbowl or Bust?
We've got nothing today
On offense. It’s not fair to put this entire game on a defense that’s not well-suited to the Cardinals’ receivers.
Douglas makes a bad decision to field that one
My rule has always been if the ball is inside the 10 you should always fair catch and run away.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Liked the stop by the D
but field position is killing us. We need to move the ball and take some of the pressure off the defense.
turner
cant do anything today. this isnt good.
Turner's killing me
He doesn’t usually dance like that. If he had run forward on the first cut, he could’ve charged for 5 yards.
Does Turner just look a little slow today?
He got caught by that linebacker on the cut to the outside. He made that cut pretty regularly this year. Maybe we ran him too much.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Well, that was about as bad a quarter as the Falcons have played all year
And they’re only down by 7. We’ve got to get something going on the offensive side of the ball. I trust Mularkey will figure something out.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
This habit of playing JUST well enough to win
is aging me prematurely. At least it kills my appetite!
That's the Turner I've been waiting for
13 yarder to start the quarter.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
I'm with you
I was down on him before this season, but he’s pulled it all together quite nicely.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Dude, they're not calling it today
They finally got one on the DE on the Roddy White play.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
cards corners are average
they’re safeties are pretty good
im liking the short passes and the running consistency in this quarter
good adjustment by the falcons so far
its something dallas doesnt do well and should learn from
Superbowl or Bust?
So far, so not so good
The Buzzsaw’s fired up, and until this drive we’ve looked mighty tentative.
NO DON’T KICK THE FIGGIE!!!
not only that
but its the playoffs. Do everything in your power to win
by metal_militia on Jan 3, 2009 5:25 PM EST up reply actions
I say go for it
At worst you give the Cardinals the ball with 90 yards to go. At best, you get 4 downs to score.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
i say
challenge that, he clearly had the ball stretched across didnt he?
FG is good
7-3. Hard to argue with sure points at this stage of the game. The O is playing much better now, we’ll get our chances later.
I don't get that
Why do you take a timeout if you’re going to kick it? They could have challenged the spot and wasted the timeout that way.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
No kiddin!
That burned a TO right there…

Way to defend that Foxworth!
Great tackle in open field in the open field.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
boldin
has been pretty much shut down
just keep a safety over fitz and maybe cards pass game is slowed down
Superbowl or Bust?
He looked fine on those two blitzes against Warner
He got picked by the route on that play and took a bad angle. I don’t think it’s the back.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
There we go
Way to whiff on that tackle, Lawyer. If we can’t shut that down it’s gonna be a long afternoon.
Definitely
looks like he’s lost a step or two.
What would the Falcons be without a has-been DB?
by johnnybacardi on Jan 3, 2009 5:35 PM EST up reply actions
It looks like we're working the short to medium range passes well
Should be able to bust a run if we keep it up.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Roddy with the dropsies...
Sigh. As much good as he’s done, he’s dropped some biggies this year.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
I saw that too
Refs need to keep their eyes open…
by johnnybacardi on Jan 3, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions
Jesus
The defense was offsides on that play. This is seriously getting ridiculous. You can’t get that many good jumps in a game.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Roddy, you are mind boggling this year
He makes a difficult catch for a 1st down, but drops a wide open easy 30 yarder.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
You've got to be kidding me..
The DT jumped on that Ryan scramble. This is unbelievable. If I’m Smitty and Dimitroff, I’m filing a complaint with the NFL after this game.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Nice toss and catch to Finneran for the 1st
This is a really good drive for Ryan. He’s looked good.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
gotta love the half empty stadium
booing at a running td
something they rarely see
Superbowl or Bust?
I got to give the Cards' fans some props
They booed for us scoring a clean TD. That’s some hatred I can get behind.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
They're saying Boldin has cramps
I’d be okay if he got turf toe or something and missed the rest of the game.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
INT on the tipped pass!!
Yes. That’s what I’m talking about. Tom Hammond called him “Chee-vis” Jackson.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Jesus
Pollard dropped the ball again though he was down. He’s trying to give me a heart attack.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Great field position after the INT
Pollard with the catch at the 2:00 warning. If we score here, it might be our game changer.
Are they going to call the offsides this time?
Shocker. And the crowd boos as if you couldn’t clearly see him cross the line.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
All season long
Ryan’s weakness has been those passes where he leads a receiver too far. Offseason work, definitely.
Peeeeellllle!
Touchdown! Guess we were saving him for right now. Way to cash in on the INT, Falcons!
17-14, feeling very good right now.
That's the way to end the half
And we get the ball first in the 3rd quarter. Now let’s not do anything stupid on this kickoff and just get into the locker room with the lead.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
atlanta making it look easy at this point.
i am glad to see we are staying within our game plan even with starting out so slow
Nope
They’re gonna run a screen to Fitzgerald. That’s questionable.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
17-14 falcons
end of half
atl gets it back at the 3rd
things r looking good my friends
Superbowl or Bust?
Stay with the game plan
no real need to adjust. after the first couple drives the cards now look like hell.
No
Short answer. The soft Chargers D can’t shut down Pey-Pey.
by johnnybacardi on Jan 3, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions
Not necessarily
Colts D ranks 31st against the run this year and still have managed to win their last 9 games. So when they win, it’s not by shutting down the run so much as by scoring and by forcing turnovers.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
Kudos so far
to Mularkey for opening up the game plan and airing it out. Also, 30-yard drop aside, White has had a real good first half so far, as has Matty Ice Balls.
If Atlanta gets at least a double digit lead
I’d begin to pound the football repeatedly and wear that already tired-looking Cardinals defense out. The difference is I’d consider using Norwood more often because he is providing much more of a spark between the tackles.
PLAYOFFS?!
Actually ...highlight of the game for me was
me running from the TV in living room to the PC after the first TD. had to almost hurdle Susan to get thru the hallway.
For the last three years
Dungy has contemplated retirement, so it is uncertain weather he will coach the Colts next year or not. I hope he does, but at least he isnt t like Favre with his decisions. He makes up his mind in about a week after the season ends.
by metal_militia on Jan 3, 2009 6:22 PM EST up reply actions
ahh sucks
their d-line is getting good jumps
some of them are offsides some of them are just good jumps
their d-line is the strongest part of their d
its still a close game
Superbowl or Bust?
stick to the gameplan
its been working so far
except on that one play, but that was just bad execution
Superbowl or Bust?
Aynone think that Turner actually runs a legit 4.4 40 still?

"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."

it sucks when that happens trust me
and the flags are killing the falcs
Superbowl or Bust?
Rackers is who we THOUGHT he was!!
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
Ever since watching his game-losing miss against da Bears and the resultant Denny Green meltdown
…Rackers kicking wide has been linked in my mind with that phrase.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
I have returned.
And how in the bleep did Arizona score??

"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."

The run sets that stuff up.
That said, James seems to be running into his own man a lot, they’re doing a better job tackling him that we are.
Edge could cut better if he took off that stupid visor.
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
This is the same Arizona that was dead last in rushing this year, right?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Warner just ran for a first down.
Do I need to repeat that?
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
Funny how
We think we’ve gotten screwed by the refs and Arizona fans feel they’ve gotten screwed by the refs. Sure sign that they’ve done a terrible job.
Did the Falcons hire Willie Martinez from Georgia to coach tackling?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Apparently covering receivers out of the backfield isn't very important either
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
We're dead in the water
with this defense.
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."

Even if the Falcons win today, they don’t have the energy or defensive power to make it past the Divisionals.

You're probably right
There comes a point where a young team like us hits the wall. Didn’t think it would be this week, though.

we need a turnover and even then I’m not optimistic. Sheesh.
Well I blame the Saints defense for this loss, because Atlanta wouldn't be playing today if it weren't for them.
PLAYOFFS?!
Was that not the penultimate line of the year?
Tom Hammond said “James dragging Keith Brooking along”

It's not over
Only a 2 score game, anything can happen. Keeping the faith a little longer around my house.
I keep playin the tape in my head
They made that comeback WE ALL know of 10 years ago, i just wish it will happen here

Okay, everyone
I know we’re all pissed off, but let’s try to keep this as friendly as possible. Please.
Should have been a personal foul on James
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."
- Bobby Cox (talking about Boyer)
The Cards have held the ball for 15 minutes this half
That’s the stat of the game right now.

I'm dancing in my invisible 2009 Draft Day hat.
Let’s draft some big uglies to shore up our defense!
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
Heard that
We definitely need to get some more playmakers on defense.

O-Line needs it more
Clabo shouldn’t be starting. Bottom line.
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."
- Bobby Cox (talking about Boyer)
We stopped 'em
The offense gets a chance to make this a one-score game
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
it'd be appropriate
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."
- Bobby Cox (talking about Boyer)
I think a miracle would be the referees being replaced
I don’t see that happening though
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
OK
Here we go! TD … right here. It’s now or never. Matty Ice coming out party in T-Minus 3, 2, 1 …
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."

Eight minutes to score 2 touchdowns?
Can we do it? Maybe.
Will we? Probably not.
I’ll hold out hope.
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
once the first td is scored
things will suddenly look better
but then u gotta play defense again
its not over yet
Superbowl or Bust?
Fumble
That fumble at the start of the second half has killed us…completely. We were sitting pretty good. That doesn’t happen this game is completely different. Dammit!
That fumble...
That unnerved us, no doubt.

Don't play the "what if" game
If Chicago doesn’t have that boneheaded kickoff we don’t win that game.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Wise beyond your years, sir.
And what an adorable SBNation avatar, to boot.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
don't play the what if game?
As good as that sounds, it doesn’t make much sense in the end. Referencing the fumble is not an excuse, it’s an observation. Sure Falcons lost the game and they had plenty of chances to win it. But you can’t deny the impact of that play.
even when he does analysis on nfl network
i can only think about “playoffs?? playoffs? u wanna talk about…playoffs??”
Superbowl or Bust?
Wallace: Sons of Scotland, I am William Wallace.
Young soldier: William Wallace is 7 feet tall.
Wallace: Yes, I’ve heard. Kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he’d consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse. I AM William Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What would you do without freedom? Will you fight?
Veteran soldier: Fight? Against that? No, we will run; and we will live.
Wallace: Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you’ll live — at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom!!!

its worked on the cards all season
keep it going falcons
Superbowl or Bust?
We need to hurry it up.
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
Vagrant offsides. Wow.
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
How was that offsides any different from any of the no-calls earlier?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
its not
and they blew the play dead instead of letting it be a free throw like its supposed to

First down Roddy white.

With a stop...
and some magic…
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
Let's don't forget
The Cards have been spitting the bit all year long in games like this. Maybe wishful thinking, but…
I like your line of thinking
"The nice thing about supporting a bedraggled-cum-decent team? Watching all those analysts eat their words."
yea we scored 10 points in 2 minutes on them to force OT
but to see it all go down the drain along with our season with a blocked punt
they still have the lead so now its on the D
Superbowl or Bust?
I believe in wishful thinking
as a Colts fan, I have to. I don’t know the exact numbers of 17+ deficits that the Colts have overcome in the fourth quarter in the playoffs, but it’s HIGH.
All things are possible.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

I'll tell you what
Mr. Brooking ran down Edge there. He actually showed semblance of athleticism.

That was satisfying.

That was stupid
Let’s get out of field goal range that would lock up the game.

And that's the game.

BROOOOOOOOOOKING!
I love the guy. But he’s gone.

well
u guys have had a good season
4-12 to the playoffs is huge
matt ryan didnt have his best day but hes got a bright future
Superbowl or Bust?
Seriously
3rd and 16 and you jump on the short route? Brooking just played his last game in an Atlanta uni.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Terrible coverage
Actually, no coverage at all. We had a chance up until that. Terrible playcall, terrible play by personnel, terrible terrible terrible. I love this team and I loved this season, but everything that was wrong with us this season came to light in this one.
Gotta say
I don’t hate the Cards, actually, but they’re gonna have a tougher time keeping Warner upright against the Giants’ pass rush so they better enjoy it now.
We had our chances
and p!ssed them away. Hopefully this game will help our team somewhere down the road. It’s been a great year, though.
This isn't how it was supposed to happen
I seriously can deal with losing to a team. I can’t deal with self-inflicted wounds and stupid mistakes like we made today.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Sorry Dave.
Fuckity McFucks.
First Alabama lets Utah own them. Then the Falcons lose to the Cardinals. I’m going to go drink some alcohol and hope I can sleep tonight.

Everyone ready for the media to hype the crap out of the most undeserving team in the playoffs?
Me thinks the word “Tillman” will resound.
"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."
- Bobby Cox (talking about Boyer)
Yeah ... me neither
Not sure if you’re agreeing w/ me. If you aren’t, what I mean is that they’ll hype the fact that Tillman was a Cardinal … until the Cards lose next week.

Superbowl or Bust?
What a year!
Hope youse guys have a good evening. Don’t let the game ruin your day, it’s just a game after all. Cheers!
Valiantly fought. See you next year!

Hey
If you had told me in July that the season would turn out this way, I’d have taken it in a heartbeat. So we’ll get ’em next year. What a season.
It really was
Once we’ve had a couple days to cool down, we can start processing one of the best seasons I can remember.
Fantastic season guys, sorry it had to end this way, but in a way they did not deserve this game.
Too many mistakes, horrid defense, no pass rush, and pathetic playcalling.
Don’t worry though, Atlanta will be back next year!
PLAYOFFS?!
The D Coordinator isn't the issue
This defense played above its individual pieces this year. Van Gorder did a great job with what he had.

great
season guys. wasnt meant to be today. i would like to see norwood more involved though. seemed like every time he touched the ball something good was happpening.
good point
if we’re not gonna use him mine as well trade him and get some draft picks for him.
agreed
shoulda woulda coulda didn’t do it. we just went with what has been working all year long …wasn’t enough today
i hope if they keep him they use him more
norwood is doing good things for us and needs to be allowed to do more
It's been fun
This is the first time I’ve done this open thread thing here, it’s been a blast! Too bad it will be the last time this year…
Wait until the draft
That’s a big open thread thing, and you’ll get to hear me rant and rave for hours on end.
night all
and great season. thank you dave for such a wonderful webite and thank you all for being such good friends
Yes...congrats to all on a great season...
Sucks bad to lose this way and to lose to the Cardinals who didn’t look like they were in for a playoff win the way they’d been performing. They had a great season. 11-5 and in the playoffs. We’ve got the right combination of GM and coach now. Things are turning around. Just wish the only game I got to watch all season (I live in Washington D.C.) had to be a loss. Take care all.
The Falcons are back. Here’s to getting that horrible horrible stat of no back to back winning seasons ever off our back next year. Whoo Whoo!
