Playoff Open Thread: Atlanta Falcons at Arizona Cardinals

via cache.gettyimages.com

This is it, guys. Everything the Falcons have worked so hard for comes down to this. Lose and go home with a successful season under our belts and a general sense of satisfaction. Win and continue a season that's been so magical that it makes Merlin like a boring old fart.

I'll be here with you guys to talk game, so hopefully you'll all show up. We've got a million angles to talk about, but hopefully the really important one comes to the forefront: the win. It should be a great game, either way.

If you want to see what Cardinals fans are up to, check out my good friends over at Revenge Of The Birds.

GO FALCONS!!!!!!

Good luck to you guys, I think you can beat the Cardinals.

NBC

is anti-falcons… I swear – maybe it’s the cardinals that are hurting our press coverage

“so how about those falcons?”
“yeah, the colts look really good!”

Everybody is

Nobody respects us. They talk about what we’ve done, but there’s always this element of doubt. Screw ’em.

Guys, you have to realize that the Cardinals are the hot pick every year

They’ll be so biased towards Arizona and it’s unfortunate.

Pete Prisco of Sportsline picked the Cardinals to win 15 out of 16 times in the regular season and he picked them to win the NFC West 4 years in a row.

it's alright

it took like 10 weeks before the Falcons ever started to get picked to win games – but I think our record speaks for itself.

Best quote ever about sportswriters

From SI.com

Norm Van Brocklin, former NFL quarterback and coach and now a pecan farmer in Social Circle, Ga., describing the brain surgery he underwent two years ago: “It was a brain transplant. I got a sportswriter’s brain so I could be sure I had one that hadn’t been used.”

I saw a stat...

Falcons are 3-6 on road in playoffs:
Win ’91 New Orleans
Win ’98 Minnesota
Win ’02 Green Bay

Loss ’91 Washington
Loss ’02 Philadelphia
Loss ’04 Philadelphia

Which ones did I miss? Thanks

Time to kick it off, gents

Looks like we’re going to be on the defensive side of the ball first. Let’s get to Warner and hopefully he’ll put the ball on the turf.

by Dave Choate on Jan 3, 2009 5:14 PM EST reply actions

Does Turner just look a little slow today?

He got caught by that linebacker on the cut to the outside. He made that cut pretty regularly this year. Maybe we ran him too much.

He looked fine on those two blitzes against Warner

He got picked by the route on that play and took a bad angle. I don’t think it’s the back.

by Funballad on Jan 3, 2009 6:03 PM EST reply actions

No

Short answer. The soft Chargers D can’t shut down Pey-Pey.

by johnnybacardi on Jan 3, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

Not necessarily

Colts D ranks 31st against the run this year and still have managed to win their last 9 games. So when they win, it’s not by shutting down the run so much as by scoring and by forcing turnovers.

May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

Kudos so far

by johnnybacardi on Jan 3, 2009 6:07 PM EST reply actions

If Atlanta gets at least a double digit lead

I’d begin to pound the football repeatedly and wear that already tired-looking Cardinals defense out. The difference is I’d consider using Norwood more often because he is providing much more of a spark between the tackles.

For the last three years

Dungy has contemplated retirement, so it is uncertain weather he will coach the Colts next year or not. I hope he does, but at least he isnt t like Favre with his decisions. He makes up his mind in about a week after the season ends.

they still have the lead so now its on the D

I believe in wishful thinking

as a Colts fan, I have to. I don’t know the exact numbers of 17+ deficits that the Colts have overcome in the fourth quarter in the playoffs, but it’s HIGH.

All things are possible.

by AuditDawg on Jan 3, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply actions

Yup.

What a horrible mistake by the two of them. I was screaming my head off. We had a chance to have a 2 minute drive to try and win the game. Blown by a dumb mistake. Then again, the team made more of those than usual today.

by pthatch on Jan 3, 2009 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

Terrible coverage

Actually, no coverage at all. We had a chance up until that. Terrible playcall, terrible play by personnel, terrible terrible terrible. I love this team and I loved this season, but everything that was wrong with us this season came to light in this one.

by Dave Choate on Jan 3, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply actions

Gotta say

I don’t hate the Cards, actually, but they’re gonna have a tougher time keeping Warner upright against the Giants’ pass rush so they better enjoy it now.

by johnnybacardi on Jan 3, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply actions

We had our chances

and p!ssed them away. Hopefully this game will help our team somewhere down the road. It’s been a great year, though.

by tom slick on Jan 3, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply actions

This isn't how it was supposed to happen

I seriously can deal with losing to a team. I can’t deal with self-inflicted wounds and stupid mistakes like we made today.

But he has virtually nothing to do with this team. I don’t get it.

by Dave Choate on Jan 3, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah ... me neither

Not sure if you’re agreeing w/ me. If you aren’t, what I mean is that they’ll hype the fact that Tillman was a Cardinal … until the Cards lose next week.

by Funballad on Jan 3, 2009 7:50 PM EST reply actions

Yes...congrats to all on a great season...

Sucks bad to lose this way and to lose to the Cardinals who didn’t look like they were in for a playoff win the way they’d been performing. They had a great season. 11-5 and in the playoffs. We’ve got the right combination of GM and coach now. Things are turning around. Just wish the only game I got to watch all season (I live in Washington D.C.) had to be a loss. Take care all.

The Falcons are back. Here’s to getting that horrible horrible stat of no back to back winning seasons ever off our back next year. Whoo Whoo!
