A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Rooting In The Playoffs

This has been the kind of playoffs that makes you wonder if you accidentally mixed LSD in with your whiskey sour.

Seriously, who would have predicted that the conference championship in the NFC would feature the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles? A crazy person, that's who! Even though I thought the Titans were set up for a surprise loss, the Giants falling to the Eagles was something I never would've seen coming.

If you're like me, it's left you wondering who you should pull for. Normally I'm not at a loss until the Super Bowl, when there's regularly games between two teams I either don't care about or completely detest (see Raiders-Bucs).

For me, the easy choice is the Cardinals. Not only did they beat us and clear out the Panthers, but they've also been one of the saddest franchises in the history of sports. When the rest of the field includes teams that have beat the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game and AFC teams that have been here recently, I don't think it's that difficult a choice.

How about you guys? Got a preference?

Go Cards!

Watching that disaster in Carolina made me feel much better about our loss.

I'm rooting for Pittsburgh

Normally, after the Falcons are out of it, I go for the team with the most Georgia Bulldogs on it. But Hines Ward trumps them all. I’m still angry that the Falcons passed on him for Jammi German.

Definitely rooting for the Cards.

They beat us, but didn’t embarrass us (we could have won that game with some defense) and then they embarrassed the crap out of the overrated Panthers.

I also don’t think they’ve ever seen a Super Bowl field before, have they? At least our Falcons have been on the big stage. Arizona hasn’t been there yet. If anyone deserves it more than the Falcons, it’s the Cards.

I'm going Eagles

Yeah, I know it was quite galling when they beat us this season, but I think McNabb is cool and I like defenses that blitz a lot. Is this allowed? Or do I have to hand in my Falcons colours now and slink off in shame?

I don’t want the Cards to win because I just don’t think they’re very good – they’ve only won playoffs against teams with turnover-happy offenses so far, and I think they’ll be owned by a decent team that actually plays to its potential*; I don’t want the Ravens to win because then I’d probably have to admit that Joe Flacco is a better rookie QB than Matt Ryan; and I’ve not watched a Steelers game this season so I don’t know anything about them, and that doesn’t seem like a good reason to support them.

  • OK, I didn’t see the Panthers game – the Cardinals might have been amazing for all I know – but surely most teams would have been able to win that game considering Delhomme’s FIVE interceptions… And the Cards weren’t really any good against us either – we just played poorly on the day and let them take advantage…

i agree with you igno

Philly is the hottest team in the country and the only reason the cards made it to the playoffs is the Seahawks entire offense was desimated by injuries this year. I want to see the Eagles win and beat either the Ravens or Steelers in the Superbowl.

Ravens

I can’t root for the Cardinals: They knocked the Falcons out of the playoffs, plus Kurt Warner is just creepy.

I can’t root for the Steelers: They just won it all a couple years ago, plus their fans are plenty smug already.

I can’t root for the Eagles: They kept us out of the ’04 Super Bowl, the Phillies just won the World Series, and my ex-wife lives in Philadelphia.

Flacco is pretty cool. Go Ravens!

I'm rooting Cards on NFC side

Ravens on AFC side… haven’t picked my superbowl team yet.

I just want to see the Cardinals go all the way so I can laugh at everyone who made fun of me when the Cards beat the Falcons.

It's funny to me when people say Vick shouldn't get another shot at playing in the league ...

I’m like, “Ray Lewis got another chance … farging shaz, he killed a dude!”

"He's getting better, but he's not there yet ..."

Steelers

Obviously.

Then, if the Steelers lose to the Ravens, it’ll be whoever the Ravens play.

Not a fan of the Ravens, I see.

Let’s keep the Peagles out.

Eagles

As much as I despise the Eagles, I really want to see Donovan succeed in the playoffs then give the entire city a huge F you and go play somewhere else. Literally from the second that guy was drafted that city has done nothing but given him crap.

While I have a couple friends who are Philly fans and I hate to make a generalization, but I think there is a good amount of truth to the whole “Philly fans are A-holes” stereotype out there. The funny thing is that I think they wear it like a badge of honor.

A) They booed Santa and pelted him with snowballs at a game once.
B) Veterans Stadium had a courtroom and a jail in the basement for gamedays.

So in a strange way I am rooting for them as a result of my disdain for them. That makes sense…… doesn’t it?

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

Living in AZ....

And having a father that roots for AZ I really have no choice. Going to the Eagles game tomorrow and yes, I was at the Falcons game in my Vick jersey.
