Pre-Season Open Thread: Atlanta Falcons vs. Tennessee Titans
This is the week where Matt Ryan gets a chance to win the starting job for the Falcons, save the princess from the dragon and ride off into the sunset. Can he triumph over evil (aka the Titans?)
Only time will tell! Until then, join me for this open thread extravaganza.
Who? Atlanta Falcons vs. Tennessee Titans, 7:30 p.m. ET
Where? Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia
Weather? The metal roof over our head will protect us from harm, friends!
Fun Fact? The Falcons will face former tight end and team great Alge Crumpler for the first time today.
Injuries? Nothing significant at this point.
Odds? Are you people made of money or something? These games, they mean nothing!
Foe? Jimmy at Music City Miracles will be blogging along on the trials and travails of the Titans, and he also might stop by here. Feel free to give him some good-natured hell if he does.
GO FALCONS! Let's tower over these Titans!

Updated Injury List
Courtesy of atlantafalcons.com, of course:
- CB David irons
- T Terrance Pennington
- C Alex Stepanovich
- TE Martrez Milner
J. Michael Moore is also reporting that Todd Weiner will start at right tackle and Curtis Lofton will get the start at MLB over Tony Taylor.
As a note
I’ll be providing my updates in the comments from now on, as it’s easier and I can better converse with all of you. Let me know what you think.
Settling for a field goal
At least we definitely know Elam’s leg works.
Matt Ryan looks pretty good again so far. At this point, he’s earning his way to the starter’s job.
Harvey Dahl
Gets a false start penalty, slowing what was otherwise a sick start to a drive by Ryan.
Incidentally, Mike Jenkins has caught five passes so far. Hell just got a little drafty.
Titans' receivers
Making the Roddy White/Jenkins tandem of a couple years ago look like Rice and Taylor.
YES YES YES!
Ryan tosses a TD. He has virtually locked up the starting job at this point, and I’m going to find it difficult to argue against it.
God!
I can’t get coverage here in Athens? How is this game blacked out in Georgia!? I’ve looked at all my channels, and NBC is covering the Dallas game for some reason. Not even on NFL network! What am I paying DirectTV for?
Keep me updated Dave!
Hey!
This might be one of the few Falcons games I’m paying attention to that we’re winning this year (crosses fingers, hope not!).
I like Brown, too
Which makes it a tough decision, in my mind. Snelling offers more goal line value, but Brown could end up better in the long term.
Awesome
Can I come? At least our offensive line isn’t the sieve that I was worried they’d be. Even if instead of sacks they get penalized, that’s ok with me. Just don’t turn Ryan into Carr.
They're pretty solid
I worry about a guy like Dahl who seems to have problems reigning himself in, but pretty much everything about this year looks better than it did under Petrino.
Koenen punts
The offense still isn’t exactly dynamic, but guys like Finneran are getting a lot of run today.
Well
considering he’ll tear his ACL in week 1, then I’m all for him getting his yards and playing time in now. He’s the Mike Hampton of the Falcons, except less overall talent than Hampton is suppose to have.
Hampton
One of the most overrated guys ever, even before you factor in the endless stream of injuries. It amazes me that some guys can turn potential alone into giant contracts.
Willie Evans
Has what’s likely to be his last glorious moment before he’s cut, with a sack of Kerry Collins.
If you can call sacking Kerry Collins glorious.
Ryan looked great tonight
But Redman’s doing enough with his chances that he’s still in the conversation. At this point, though, I have a feeling he’ll be the backup.
Marching
Redman has arguably been better, given that it’s taken him fewer passes to get close to 100 yards, but it’s worth keeping in mind that he’s facing the Titans’ backups.
Snelling continues to perform pretty darn well out there.
Thomas Brown for the TD
The Titans are just making everyone look like a hero today. Brown got a ton of run on that last drive and manages to take it home. He and Snelling are making the #3 RB battle pretty interesting.
Awesome
I’m all for making people work for that position. Make Brown and Snelling earn that position.
This team figures to be run-centric
So I think it’s more important to have a solid #3 than it has been in a while.

Kroy Biermann
Drops Ingle Martin for a sack. I didn’t expect anything out of Biermann before the season, but he’s at least going to make the roster after the pre-season he’s had. He could be great as a high-energy bench guy.
And that's the game
17-3, Falcons triumph. A very sloppy game, but we won, so what the hell. I’ll have postgame thoughts up tonight or tomorrow morning.
Sorry
I missed it. “Tropical Storm/Hurricane/Tropical Storm/very confused weather pattern Fay” couldn’t seem to make up it’s damned mind where it wanted to go, so it just hovered over NE Florida for a week. I was without power for stretches, without Sat TV for even more longer stretches, and even had it been nice and sunny, being in Freakville doesn’t help when it comes to getting Falcons games on TV.
Maybe when the Jags have road games and the Falcons are at home I’ll get to catch a glimpse.
