Pre-Season Open Thread: Atlanta Falcons vs. Tennessee Titans

This is the week where Matt Ryan gets a chance to win the starting job for the Falcons, save the princess from the dragon and ride off into the sunset. Can he triumph over evil (aka the Titans?)

Only time will tell! Until then, join me for this open thread extravaganza.

Who? Atlanta Falcons vs. Tennessee Titans, 7:30 p.m. ET

Where? Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia

Weather? The metal roof over our head will protect us from harm, friends!

Fun Fact? The Falcons will face former tight end and team great Alge Crumpler for the first time today.

Injuries? Nothing significant at this point.

Odds? Are you people made of money or something? These games, they mean nothing!

Foe? Jimmy at Music City Miracles will be blogging along on the trials and travails of the Titans, and he also might stop by here. Feel free to give him some good-natured hell if he does.

GO FALCONS! Let's tower over these Titans!

As a note

I’ll be providing my updates in the comments from now on, as it’s easier and I can better converse with all of you. Let me know what you think.

Titans moving with ease

Not a good sign for our secondary.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

3-0 Titans

Falcons finally clamped down on the Titans’ horrible WRs, and we’ll get the ball.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 7:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ryan moving!

Two efficient passes to Mike Jenkins gets us going.

Punt

Only the first drive, but mistakes stalled it.

Credit where it's due

Vince Young is doing well thus far.

Chris Houston

With a particularly great penalty. Well done, Chris!

John Abraham

Mashes Vince Young. Way to earn your paycheck, guy!

Chevis Jackson!

Terrific interception there.

Settling for a field goal

At least we definitely know Elam’s leg works.

Matt Ryan looks pretty good again so far. At this point, he’s earning his way to the starter’s job.

Falcons get the ball back

And now it’s time for Ryan to excel.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Harvey Dahl

Gets a false start penalty, slowing what was otherwise a sick start to a drive by Ryan.

Incidentally, Mike Jenkins has caught five passes so far. Hell just got a little drafty.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I should note

Dahl is piling up some penalties. This does not bode well for him.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Koenen punts

Penalties continue to kill this team.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Vince Young starting to slow down

But when you don’t have any receivers, what do you expect?

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Titans' receivers

Making the Roddy White/Jenkins tandem of a couple years ago look like Rice and Taylor.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Laurent Robinson

Might as well not even be on the field tonight.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Elam

Horrible miss on that one.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Halftime!

Am I going to be talking to myself in the second half, too?

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey, our first Matt Ryan run!

Of the game. Four yards on a scramble, even.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Norwood rips off a huge run

That’s the big play potential he brings.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

YES YES YES!

Ryan tosses a TD. He has virtually locked up the starting job at this point, and I’m going to find it difficult to argue against it.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

God!

I can’t get coverage here in Athens? How is this game blacked out in Georgia!? I’ve looked at all my channels, and NBC is covering the Dallas game for some reason. Not even on NFL network! What am I paying DirectTV for?

Keep me updated Dave!

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You got it, man

Snelling 7 yards up the gut, action is slow at the moment. Still 10-3 Falcons.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey!

This might be one of the few Falcons games I’m paying attention to that we’re winning this year (crosses fingers, hope not!).

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean, Yahoo!'s sportsline is helpful too

This is unbelievable. Blargh! Thanks Fox Sports!

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Snelling looks GREAT

3 carries, 30 yards. CBS Sportsline is also a good one for tracking.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You, sir

Are a huge Snelling fan, aren’t you?

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Brown, too

Which makes it a tough decision, in my mind. Snelling offers more goal line value, but Brown could end up better in the long term.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Atrocious

Our offensive line is throwing a penalty party today.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Awesome

Can I come? At least our offensive line isn’t the sieve that I was worried they’d be. Even if instead of sacks they get penalized, that’s ok with me. Just don’t turn Ryan into Carr.

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're pretty solid

I worry about a guy like Dahl who seems to have problems reigning himself in, but pretty much everything about this year looks better than it did under Petrino.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Koenen punts

The offense still isn’t exactly dynamic, but guys like Finneran are getting a lot of run today.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well

considering he’ll tear his ACL in week 1, then I’m all for him getting his yards and playing time in now. He’s the Mike Hampton of the Falcons, except less overall talent than Hampton is suppose to have.

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hampton

One of the most overrated guys ever, even before you factor in the endless stream of injuries. It amazes me that some guys can turn potential alone into giant contracts.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Third quarter ends

The Titans are crawling down the field.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well,

They’re more than likely not throwing it down the field, so that makes sense.

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Their receivers are terrible

Excepting Alge, and he’s no lock to last the season.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Willie Evans

Has what’s likely to be his last glorious moment before he’s cut, with a sack of Kerry Collins.

If you can call sacking Kerry Collins glorious.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ryan looked great tonight

But Redman’s doing enough with his chances that he’s still in the conversation. At this point, though, I have a feeling he’ll be the backup.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 9:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Marching

Redman has arguably been better, given that it’s taken him fewer passes to get close to 100 yards, but it’s worth keeping in mind that he’s facing the Titans’ backups.

Snelling continues to perform pretty darn well out there.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thomas Brown for the TD

The Titans are just making everyone look like a hero today. Brown got a ton of run on that last drive and manages to take it home. He and Snelling are making the #3 RB battle pretty interesting.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 10:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Awesome

I’m all for making people work for that position. Make Brown and Snelling earn that position.

by blackertai on Aug 22, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This team figures to be run-centric

So I think it’s more important to have a solid #3 than it has been in a while.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kroy Biermann

Drops Ingle Martin for a sack. I didn’t expect anything out of Biermann before the season, but he’s at least going to make the roster after the pre-season he’s had. He could be great as a high-energy bench guy.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 10:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And that's the game

17-3, Falcons triumph. A very sloppy game, but we won, so what the hell. I’ll have postgame thoughts up tonight or tomorrow morning.

by Dave the Falconer on Aug 22, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry

I missed it. “Tropical Storm/Hurricane/Tropical Storm/very confused weather pattern Fay” couldn’t seem to make up it’s damned mind where it wanted to go, so it just hovered over NE Florida for a week. I was without power for stretches, without Sat TV for even more longer stretches, and even had it been nice and sunny, being in Freakville doesn’t help when it comes to getting Falcons games on TV.

Maybe when the Jags have road games and the Falcons are at home I’ll get to catch a glimpse.
