SHOCK - Keep Him?
As both a Georgia fan and a Falcons fan, I would love to see D.J. in a Falcons uni this fall. He certainly has a lot to prove, but I don't think you can rule him out at this point (since everybody is new to the system). I was wondering what you all thought. Can D.J. help us? If so, in what way? What do you think he needs to do to beat out Redman or Joey? I have my own thoughts, but I'd love to hear yours. I know this is a random post, but I figured it might help some ATL faithful pass the time until training camp.

Grim outlook with ATL
I like the kid, but the fact that they recently signed Redman and Joey Jo-Jo to new contracts likely reflects the current management mindset.
Most probably, he’s only on the regular season roster is if someone plays really badly or gets hurt, which is out of DJ’s control. If he performs well, though, he could easily get a shot on any number of teams as a #3. Hope the kid gets a chance somewhere. Rotten luck that he got hurt, or he would have gotten a shot at starting last year.
BTW, no UGA prejudice here! I’m a Tech grad :)

Bias? There's no bias here...
But I do wonder when the Falcons are going to learn that nothing good comes out of UGAg.
BTW, I’m a Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva engineer! To hell with Georgia!
Seriously though, the chances of him making it are so slim that the only way he makes the team is if one of the other three get injured in training. The facts are that Redman and Joey are on new contracts and his is up soon. It has also been clearly stated that Redman is first chair, Joey is second and that he is in direct competition with Ryan for the third spot, which in and of itself means that he has no chance in hell to make the roster, if everyone stays healthy of course. It’s very unfortunate that he is never going to get a real shot and I hate it for the guy for having two knee injuries, but I really don’t see any teams who are going to be willing to take a chance on that.
Like I have said before, it looks like he is following the same type of career path that Joe Hamilton took and it may be in his best interest to let go of the NFL and start looking into either the AFL or the CFL. Maybe he goes there and blows up the record books and becomes the next Doug Flutie, who knows. But currently, I really think his NFL days are over.

I agree that the outlook is also grim for D.J. The running QB just doesn’t seem to be the direction that the team is going. Honestly for him to make the cut i believe that he would have to basically own training camp. I mean throw the ball downfield 80 yards across his body, while at a full sprint, and put it in the one spot that Roddy could catch it. And do that maybe 30 times.
The Falcons should sign Chuck Norris.

I disagree! DJ has a great chance of beating out Joey for a spot. Joey showed his weak arm, lack of fortitude under fire and inescapability last year. Other teams noticed it and it disgusted Perino. That type of experience is something that the Falcons do not need at this juncture. With the rebuilding of the Falcons O-line, to have three QBs that are not nimble of feet would be a tragedy. DJ has a better arm than both Redmon and Harrington and would bring another aspect to the Falcons attack that I am sure Coach Smith is aware of and looks forward to! Let the preseason begin and I’m sure that DJ will beat out Joey! (I am a GA Tech Fan!)

Two Words: Practice Squad
If D.J. wants to be a part of this Falcons team, he needs to swallow his pride and join the practice squad for a year. Ryan, Redman and Harrington will split the reps this year and with Ryan a rookie, there’s no room for D.J. By next year, Ryan will be starting and we’ll only need one experienced back up so there will be room for D.J. or another developmental type QB next year. He’s been patient in the past and it worked out for him pretty well, so how about one more time?

D-J
That’s what it boils down to. Harrington was cursed by Detroit just like anyone else with potential was (Peete, Batch, Sanders, Morton, Kitna)! I feel sorry for Harrington. Had he only know about Detroit! Redman would be ideal if he could throw more than 27 yrds and scramble successfully. Ryan is neither Manning nor Marino nor Brady. So what is all the hype about? $72 mil! I forgot. DJ will need more coaching and training (who doesn’t) but he could really surprise those who doubt his ability. Coach Smith stated that he liked what DJ has done so far with the first team offense. Give DJ a chance to prove he can start. He has everything except for the opportunity to start. I believe in putting the best player on the field. And when you put him on the field STAND BEHIND HIM. A certain coach named Holmgren did that with another QB named Favre that he didn’t have a lot of confidence it initially. I think his career turned out well. Wouldn’t you say?
Go DJ. That’s my DJ.
PS: We should have drafted Brohm, Woodson, or traded for Quinn!
