Sam Baker
Some of my idiot friends are still complaining about our 1st rd draft picks. They're saying we should have waited to pick up a QB like Brian Brohm in the 2nd rd. They point out the fact that as late as January most draft experts still had Brohm rated as a top ten QB (some had him over Ryan). With that in mind I did a little homework and inadvertently found something worth noting. While Brohm definitely was considered a top ten QB in January, most experts also had Sam Baker rated in the top 15...some even had Baker in the top 10 in January! SUMMARY: For everyone (especially my idiot friends) who think Brohm dropped in the rankings due to over-analysis, why don't you give the same consideration to Sam Baker???

WE WERE FORTUNATE TO DRAFT BAKER
In my opinion Sam Baker was the Falcon’s best pick. He was worth the two draft picks necessary to obtain him. He is a proven player from the #1 collegiate system in the country. He will be a starter/Pro Bowl player for 10+ years with high character as an added feature.

I Concur
Baker will prove to be a solid pick. I’m not worried, not even a little bit.

Somewhere on the line
While I do think Brohm is not the QB for us, I also think that Baker does not equal the two high second round picks. Had that been a 2 and a later round pick, then I would be much happier about it. I think very highly of Baker, I just think we could have gotten an OL with our second 2nd round pick and been just as fine. I really didn’t see us picking up much help at that position in this draft and I’m sure someone here remembers the conversation we had a while back about getting OL help through free agency or a trade.
I do think we could have gotten a much better value/pick ratio by grabbing a QB with our first second round pick only because there was so much depth at the position in the draft whereas there was not at other positions of need. I also think that most highly regarded players fell because of team needs more than anything else.

Which OL Do You Suggest
Just curious: You say we should have waited to pick up an OL in the second round. Which OL were you referring to? Do you believe this OL is as talented as Baker (or even close)? Would he have started?

It doesn't matter
Seeing as how we didn’t take Dorsey. What I meant was that if we had taken Dorsey then we should have waited to pick up both a QB and OL in the second round. As to who that would be at OL, I guess I would say the best available. Maybe Duane Brown or Kentwan Balmer or even Sam Baker, would have fallen to us, or maybe even Chil Rachal. It really doesn’t matter who we picked up because any of them would be an improvement. And yes, I do think they are as talented as Baker. None of these guys, including Baker, are going to come into the league and destroy defensive linemen and each would have certain learning and growth to go through before having an impact on their team. I don’t think Baker is going to start immediately, but just like the rest I am sure it won’t be long before they are implemented into the starting lineup.
My arguement isn’t that we picked up Sam Baker, as I have stated that I think he is a great lineman, it’s how we went about it giving up those two high second round picks. Given that we had so many needs going into the draft one would think it would be best if we didn’t lose our highest picks to get a good player. Like I said previously, had it been one of those second rounders and a later pick, say a fifth or sixth rounder, then in my opinion it would have been a much better deal.
The fact still remains that in this draft there was a plethora of quality QB’s to choose from while there were very few o-linemen and defensive tackles and we would have been better off taking Dorsey, then making a trade-up to get a quality lineman and waiting to pick up a QB in the second round. You can’t look at any one thing individually as each pick affect the others.

?
Just wondering: Which OL are you talking about (the one we should have taken in the second round)? Think he could have started/had an immediate impact like Baker?
