Atlanta Falcons vs. St. Louis Rams Open Thread

St. Louis Rams at Atlanta Falcons, Dec 28, 2008 1:00 PM EST

Massive computer issues here, so consider this the least formal open thread of all time.

With a win here and a lot of luck elsewhere, the Falcons could be looking at one of the highest seeds in the NFC Playoffs. Chew on that for a few, and root, root, root for the Dome team!

Go to it!

3 and out

for the rams!

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Jamaal Fudge starting at S today

A bad pun or two should be in order eventually.

Carolina leads 3-0

as the Rams are moving the ball pretty well this drive.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 1:18 PM EST reply actions

Rams lead 7-3

their RB Jackson did all the work on that drive. Maybe that will be a wake up call for the D; they didn’t play well at all there.

I hope so

They seem to be giving way too much cushion.

Steven Jackson

I knew he’d give us fits, but the Falcons look lax and disinterested out there. Maybe they’re not that interested in the division after all.

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2008 1:58 PM EST reply actions

Just like Denver

Definitely a feeling of malaise there.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think this time

It really is hard to get a young team like this to keep their eyes on this game. With the playoffs coming up, it’s gotta be hard to get excited for the Rams.

It’ll be interesting to see how they respond, now that they’re basically playing for pride.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 2:14 PM EST reply actions

That should be enough

This team needs to keep its momentum going and give Matt Ryan some more confidence. I’m a little skittish about the way they’ve been playing the last three or four weeks, despite some truly impressive wins.

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2008 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

also, the falcons have yet to win 3 games in a row this season. i know that is on their milestone list.

Playoff ramifications...

If Carolina and the Falcons both win, we’re the #5 seed and play Arizona.

If the Falcons lose and the Cowboys win, we’re the #6 seed and play the NFC North winner (MIN or CHI).

Memories, ahhh

They just showed the Super Bowl team doing the Dirty Bird after beating Minnesota with Dan Reeves struggling to keep up. Everyone forgets he had open heart surgery during the season that year and came back.

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Reeves' angioplasty

was kind of a galvanizing force at the end of that year. Didn’t he come back just in time for the first playoff game that year against San Francisco?

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

I believe so

I think I saw the ESPN Classic version of the NFC Championship and he came back right before the playoffs started. I think it had only been two or three weeks since his surgery, which is ridiculous b/c normally you can’t do anything until after six weeks.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Reeves

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I know we’ve got a good situation now, but I still firmly believe the downturn of this franchise was directly correlated with the firing of Dan Reeves after 2003. Of all the great things that Arthur Blank has done for the city and this franchise, that’s the one that still bugs me. I thought it was a little shortsighted.

Holy crap

Jackson just hurdled Erik Coleman to get the first down??!! That dude weighs 240 at least. Absolutely ridiculous.

Jackson

is freaky good. He must LOVE playing for a fine team like the Rams…

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Another 3rd and long

let’s not let jackson hurdle for a first on this one.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Nope

Stopped them on 3rd down.

Quality stop

Our defense is the WWII Russian Army of NFL teams. They let us get driven to the brink before they push back.

I dunno if I like that comparison

23 million Soviets died.

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

It sort of breaks down and becomes insensitive at that point

I realized afterward that I probably could’ve chosen a less historically ghastly metaphor. My bad.

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2008 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Hah

That wasn’t really my intent. Just putting it in the perspective of the massive loss before ultimate victory.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

It certainly seems like

We give up millions of yards some games, doesn’t it?

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2008 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Bend but don't break

is fine, but I think the philosophy breaks down against better teams.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

lost my video feeds and all windows closed

had a bear of a time getting things all back…no more video but i can listen to the game

by Funballad on Dec 28, 2008 3:44 PM EST reply actions

Maybe you're lucky

this ugly game is hard to watch sometimes.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Arghhh

Matty Ice has sure looked normal the last few weeks.

Sok of big nits

interception.. offense is not looking good.

Ryan

terrible freakin’ pick. Rams positioned to take the lead now.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:46 PM EST reply actions

seems like his confidence took a shot at some point. he’s been over and under throwing the ball a lot. maybe questioning himself too much instead of trusting his gut.

by armchair quarterback on Dec 28, 2008 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

It's possible

The worst thing a rookie QB can lose is confidence. I hope they give him some help after this week.

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2008 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

if NO makes a comeback

and we fall behind, i’m going to break something..

Big stop here, fellas

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:49 PM EST reply actions

It could be worse

We could be the Bucs and be losing to Oakland at home right now.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:50 PM EST reply actions

I do too

After that stunt Warren Sapp pulled against the Packers and Mike Sherman I’ve had no respect for that franchise.

Phew

Jackson is a slippery dude.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:51 PM EST reply actions

Way to hold, defense

3 points is probably a best case scenario.
Rams lead by 3.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:51 PM EST reply actions

We need to give the Rams a little credit

They’ve come out to play. Haslet’s throwing everything at us including the kitchen sink.

by AuditDawg on Dec 28, 2008 3:52 PM EST reply actions

At least get a field goal here

If need be, duct tape the ball to Michael Turner.

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

is almost imperative here.

Say what you will about how this team closes games

They don’t quit. This is the most resilient Falcons team I’ve ever seen. They might still lose this game, but you know they won’t quit.

The three steps to a heart attack in this one.

1. Look like crap
2. Catch back up
3. Profit!

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2008 3:59 PM EST reply actions

Didn’t New England beat them 49-7 or something last week?

by tom slick on Dec 28, 2008 4:08 PM EST up reply actions
