Rival Rooting: CAR vs TB

Another two of our bitter rivals, this time both one game ahead of us in the standings, battle it out a week from tonight. If the Falcons win this weekend, we will be tied for first place with the winner of the MNF showdown. Let's put this in some perspective.

Carolina's remaining schedule is as follows:

Monday, December 8 /panthers/uploadedImages/buccaneers_schedule(1).gif Vs Tampa Bay 8:30 PM EST ESPN
Sunday, December 14 den_schedule Vs Denver 4:15 PM EST CBS
Sunday, December 21 /panthers/uploadedImages/giants_schedule.gif @ New York Giants 1:00 PM EST FOX
Sunday, December 28 /panthers/uploadedImages/saints_schedule.gif @ New Orleans 1:00 PM EST FOX

Tampa's remaining schedule:

Monday, December 8  Vs Carolina                     8:30 PM EST ESPN
Sunday, December 14 den_schedule Vs Atlanta 1:00 PM EST FOX
Sunday, December 21 /panthers/uploadedImages/chargers_schedule.gif @ San Diego 8:15 PM EST FOX
Sunday, December 28 /panthers/uploadedImages/saints_schedule.gif @ Oakland 1:00 PM EST  FOX

As you can see, Tampa's schedule is much more lenient than Carolina's (outside of our Birds, of course).

Now, we can go ahead and project that the Bucs are strong enough to off the Raiders and could have (barring a sudden wake up game by LT) an almost guaranteed chance of defeating the Chargers. If they win against the Panthers and lose to Atlanta, that puts them finishing the season with a 12-4 record.

Carolina, on the other hand, is almost guaranteed a defeat by the Giants and could even be upset by the Broncos. While New Orleans is not a set win, I'm going to give the Panthers the benefit of a doubt and have them finish 11-5.

If Atlanta wins out (which I don't think they will but hey, hooray for blind optimism!) we've got a 12-4 record and (if the Bucs lose on Monday) the division lead (and therefore, a seed in the playoffs). Things get a bit dire if the Bucs win Monday, lose to the Falcons, and then win out. Carolina winning would put the Birds in a chance to take the division lead (if my projections will out).

So who am I rooting for? Well, common sense tells me to root for the Carolina and hope the Bucs falter against SD (come on Mike Carey's Moustache!) or Oakland. Any thoughts or other scenarios?

Blech

I would sooner skygammon a goat than root for the Bucs to win the division. Unless the Falcons’ playoff hopes hang in the balance, put me down for the Panthers.

I vote for destruction of both

But I will probably root for the Panthers. What really really really really really really sucks is watching the end of both of their games yesterday, both games that both teams should have lost but somehow won. So frustrating. Stupid Drew Brees throwing 2 INTs in the final 2 minutes. Stupid Aaron Rodgers. Stupid Ryan Grant. Stupid Packers defense giving up 2 50-yard Steve Smith completions in the final 2 minutes. Why couldn’t we have gotten both of those? It would have been so sweet. and we’d be tied right f’ing now. Irritating.

I was bartending yesterday...

…during the games, and everyone at the bar was yelling and screaming during the last 2 minutes of both of those games. Drew Brees choked like Tara Reid on a…well, you know. And I really expected (hoped) Aaron Rodgers to step up and deliver a tough win at home.

If Tampa beats Carolina, but Carolina wins its other 3 games and the Falcons win out, they’ll both finish 12-4. The tiebreaker would be division win percentage, and the Falcons would edge Carolina, who would have 3 division losses to the Birds’ 2.

However, if Carolina beats Tampa, and Tampa wins its other 3 while the Falcons win all 4, then Tampa and Atlanta will be tied at 12-4, with each having a 4-2 division record.

Things could get very interesting. I don’t know who to root for in this MNF game. There are so many things that could happen, it hurts my brain trying to contemplate all the possibilities.

Thinking about the big picture

I’m looking at more than just the division. There is another way into the playoffs. Taking the wild card into consideration, it would probably be best if Tampa won. If the Falcons take care of business on Sunday, they will be tied for the division lead with somebody. The Bucs have a better division and conference record than the Panthers. We are closer to the Panthers in those tiebreakers than we are the Bucs, so the Bucs taking out the Panthers would help the Falcons in the wild card chase. Since one team has to win, it may as well be the one that helps the Falcons in the most ways.

Of course, I am not beyond rooting for a series of smallish, not very serious injuries on the Bucs side. Just enough to keep any players who may be hurt out for a week or so. And (not that I am overlooking the Saints, just planning ahead), I like the fact that Tampa has to go to Carolina on a Monday and have a short week before coming to the Dome. Every little bit helps.

Dallas

The good news is that Dallas has a BRUTAL schedule from here on out.

Redskins, Eagles, Bears are all “still alive” but I think are unlikely contenders. ’Skins are sliding backwards, Eagles tie will probably hurt them, and the Bears, well they might make a push.

The goal is going to be 11-5. That’s a sure fire playoff berth, IMO. I think if you can’t get past 10-6, you’re going to rely on tiebreakers, which are working for us now, but aren’t guaranteed for the future.

We’ve heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true.

I think the teams...

…with which we should be most concerned are Dallas (tied with them, but have tiebreaker due to conference win pct.) and Minnesota, Washington and Arizona (all 1 game behind).

A win in our matchup with Minnesota puts them 2 games back, with 1 more conference loss than the Falcons. To make that up in the remaining 3 games, they’d have to win out and the Falcons would have to lose all 3. Beating the Vikes will essentially ensure that they can not catch the Birds.

But I’d rather just win out. I’d love to win the division and get home-field, but the road doesn’t scare me one bit. These boys just want to play some football. They’ll come to your house and beat you if they have to.

Arizona isn't a factor

Somebody has to win the NFC West, and its going to be them. No wild card worries there.

by SG Standard on Dec 1, 2008 4:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I thought about that when I was at dinner.

Arizona will take the West, and Minnesota will likely take the North. But if we just win out, we can control our own destiny. Imagine 3 teams from the South in the NFC playoffs. That’s be some fun football to watch.

Doesn't add up

Just came over from CSR, but I must be missing something. The winner of the Tampa/Carolina game will be 10-3 and the losing team will be 9-4. If the Falcons win, you will be 9-4. Tied for second in the division not the the division lead. Did I miss something?

But your point and question are still valid and still have to congratulate you guys for the season and team you have put together.

If it wasn’t for an annoying Falcons fan in the office I work in, I would probably pull for you guys to win the division, after the Panthers of course.

Falcons can't take the lead...

…but we’re just discussing what outcome of the MNF game would be best for the Falcons.

Sure

but tlozwarlock posted:

f the Falcons win this weekend, we will be tied for first place with the winner of the MNF showdown.

Just didn’t make since.

I guess I should add, this is a very tough call. If I was a falcons fan I would probably have to say I’d hope tampa wins. Just because our schedule is much harder and if we lose, while it does make it harder to win the division for ATL, it make a wildcard spot that much more probable.

on the other hand… (yeah a tough call)

Two reasons to pull for Carolina

Pulling for Tampa Bay, for almost any reason, is just WRONG to me. They’re like the Neidermeyers or Marmalards that we love to hate. Plus, the Falcons have proven they can beat Carolina. If we face one of the two in the postseason, I’d rather it be the boys from Charlotte right now.

by tom slick on Dec 1, 2008 6:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

3-3 tie?

with 30 injuries would be nice. Almost just kidding. Either way if we win out we win a gaurented wildcard birth. We own the tiebreakers with winning out over any currently below us. Dallas included. With winning out we still cannot win the tiebreaker against tampa bay to win the division in case of a tie so tampa must lose 2 times. Carolina and Atlanta. I for one think that if the Falcons are for real they are going to feel the time is now to prove it. They will win out, Tampa losses to Carolina and the Falcons . Carolina losses to the Giants. the Falcons win the division and a much better seed in the playoffs. So therefore I will be rooting for Carolina to win against Tampa. With 30 injuries. {Evil Grin}.

honestly

I would be very very happy to see just 3 more wins… even if we don’t take the wild card… even if we don’t see the playoffs.

11-5 rubs it in everybody’s face that Matt Ryan leads the Atlanta Falcons better than Vick (his best season being 10-6) ever did.
