Keith Brooking Fined For Hit On Donovan McNabb
The iron fist of the league strikes again, fining Keith Brooking $5,000 for a hit the NFL apparently thinks was a helmet shot on Eagles QB Donovan McNabb.
Of course, there was no penalty called on the play.

Hey Goodell,
Why don’t we just stop using our athlete’s entire upper bodies for plays. Let’s convert the goalposts into netted goals and let’s do away with all that yardage mumbojumbo. And since hte players can’t use their upperbody, make the ball round and then force the players to kick it instead of hold it or pass it.
Oh, wait, then we’d just have soccer. That’d surely sell some tickets!
For cryin’ out loud, this is FOOTBALL in the great US of A. it’s a violent sport. Did anyone fine that big Texas Tech LB that ran over Colt McCoy and slammed his facemask into McCoy’s mouth while the QB was on the ground? Nope. Did anyone fine Texas Tech’s AD? Nope. Did that hit get tons of replay online and on the sports shows? Yup.
When will NFL admin learn that those types of hits are what get them ratings in the first place?

Get used to it
Paranoia about helmet contact is apparently the new normal from now on. The league is clearly determined to cut down on concussions and other head injuries. When you look back on the offseason talk about all the retired players with serious ‘head health’ issues, it’s not surprising.
Of course, the refs need to pick their spots better and the rules clearly need refining. The league is trying to do the right thing, though, and I applaud that. The toll that head injuries have taken on some players is absolutely tragic.

Kind of unrelated but
I hope they do something about the reffing/review situation that has been a real problem this year with refs like Hochiuli and the dude who cost us the shot at the game against the Eagles. There needs to be some sort of way to try and steer the refs back in the right direction when they screw up like that and it just seems like they can make as many bad calls as they want and the NFL is just like ‘ok’.
