Atlanta Falcons vs. Philadelphia Eagles Open Thread

017027986_medium

via i.cdn.turner.com

It seems like a year since the Falcons last played a game, but blissfully we're back on the schedule today. The Falcons have beaten teams (Packers, Bears) who are arguably better than the Eagles, but their blitz packages and passing game will provide unseen challenges for our young Birds.

So gather here, you Sunday warriors, and help carry us to victory. Join me after the jump for what I definitely hope will be a good game.

Star-divide

Who? Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles, 1 p.m. ET

Where? Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Weather? Sunny!

Fun Fact? The Eagles will have Brian Westbrook back, which makes the Falcons' jobs infinitely tougher. Stopping the pass-catching back will require a superlative effort from the D; let's hope they've got it.

Oh, that wasn't fun. I'm no good at this.

Injuries? LT Sam Baker, CBs Brent Grimes and David Irons, and DT Grady Jackson are all questionable; with the exception of Irons, we need all those guys out there. A few more probables, but nobody I don't expect to play. The Eagles will be without G Shawn Andrews and possibly WR Reggie Brown, but Westbrook is back.

Odds? Philly over Atlanta, 9.0, Over/Under 45

Foe? Our good friend JasonB of Bleeding Green Nation, the nation--nay, the world's!--finest source of all things Iggles. Be sure to give the site a visit today.

GO FALCONS! Let's shoot down these Eagles!

Baker out

And Laurent Robinson, again. Brent Grimes active but not starting.

Bad news for Ryan on two fronts, though Harry Douglas will get some extended run once again. Grimes is probably limited, so be on the lookout for Chevis Jackson today.

Interesting

that Philly’s first play is a long pass.

17 yd run by Turner

called back on holding by #84. White needs to stop that dumb ass stuff, he makes 1 or 2 stupid plays every game.

Is Ryan forcing passes?

by Grayson on Oct 26, 2008 1:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sometimes.

He’s definitely got a smattering of quick reads to deal with the blitz, but that invariably leads to a forced pass.

When he’s not dialing up the ‘quickies’ his passes look smooth and crisp.

Falcons need to focus on keeping the penalties down and Ryan needs to get rid of his jitters. I know that big hit he took had to have affected his throwing power but he’s seemed jittery the entire time. His homecoming is less than welcoming, so I can understand the nerves. Hopefully halftime will cure them. There’s been big play-ability there, specially on Jenkins and White (when Samuel is duped) but Ryan’s been overthrowing them.

Jennings

There’s a lot of blame to go around.

To say the refs weren’t to blame is silly because they made a bad call.
To say the coaching wasn’t to blame is silly because you should still have a timeout or two trying to make a game-winning drive.
To say Adam Jenning isn’t to blame is silly because he should’ve caught that kick, and if he wasn’t so paranoid about muffing (which he does often enough to warrant said paranoia) he would have.

There’s a lot of blame to go around. We’ve got Quinn Ojinaka playing LT. We tried a fade route on 2nd and Goal @ the 1, instead of a handoff to Turner/Mughelli or a QB sneak. Blocking never got Turner going on the ground. DL and Blitzes couldn’t get to McNabb.

I was pleased with the game. Heartbreaker way to end it, but the same problems I’ve seen all year are still there, and I expect them to be addressed in the offseason. And our strengths are still there. And as a final positive, right before that bad call, I felt like we were going to win the game, and I haven’t felt the Falcons were capable of making a fourth quarter comeback in years.

Dear Matt Ryan: I owe you a HUGE apology. I'm sorry. Love, iRonin.

Right

You are right, there is lot’s of blame to go around. My comment about Jenning’s below wasn’t meant to imply that he himself lost the game. However I do hold him 100% to blame for that play. It wasn’t the refs fault.

Fines don’t make us 5-2. That was unconscionably bad. Completely changed the tenor of the game, as we’d started to assert ourselves, and we’d just stopped them on D. Thanks for not even trying to watch the game refs. How many games is this now this season that the refs have directly affected the outcome of? At least the SD/Denver game and this one. Unbelievable.

In retrospect

Yeah, it was a bad call. BUT (and that’s a big butt) I can’t say that I blame the refs. It was just WAY to close to call and in the heat of the moment they made a decision. I fully place the blame on the indecisiveness of Adam Jennings. He should not have put the refs or Mike Smith in that position.

Without the benefit of a replay not a single person reading this, or who watched that game (refs included) can say that without a doubt you saw him NOT touch the ball. It’s Jennings’ fault 110%. This is just the latest blunder from a guy who is literally THE WORST punt returner I have seen and I have been saying that since last season.

Someone’s head has to roll here. It’s either the special teams coach for making such a shitty ass call to keep Jenning’s in on punt returns or Jenning’s himself. Has anyone ever seen him do anything worth a shit? Does this guy have nude pictures of Arthur Blank or something? UUHHHHGGGG!!!!

Alright, I just got myself whipped into a lather here. I better stop.

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

by runningback on Oct 26, 2008 4:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know where you're coming from

As soon as I saw it, live, you could tell Jennings didn’t touch it. Why else would he back up and then NOT pursue the guy who picked up the ball and ran it into the endzone? If you know you touch it, you don’t back up and look unconcerned when the other team takes the ball untouched to the endzone. Watch any muffed punt, ever, and you’ll know that the punt returner who muffs a punt is usually looking around for where the ball went, or trying to fall on it. Jennings back up with his arms wide, and didn’t even run after it. Hands down not touched, and it was confirmed by the replays.

by blackertai on Oct 26, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And the nominees are......

“Why else would he back up and then NOT pursue the guy who picked up the ball and ran it into the endzone?”

How many times have you seen a kicker or a punter take the old flop-aroo when they were barely touched? How many times have you seen WR’s hold their arms up like they just got mugged to try and get an interference penalty? Or a DB do they same to proclaim their innocence?

To quote Master Thespian … “ACTING!!!!!”

In this case Jenning’s wasn’t acting but do you think the refs are going to make a call based on someone’s body language? He shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Like I said, it was his indecision that screwed that play up.

You are letting your perspective cloud your thinking. If you took a poll I bet the overwhelming majority of Falcon’s fans will swear that he didn’t touch it and the majority of Eagles fans will most likely say he did.

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

by runningback on Oct 27, 2008 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m an Eagles fan, and after seeing the replays I’m pretty sure he didn’t touch it and I was fully expecting the call to be overturned and the Falcons to drive down for the win. (It took a minute for the Eagles’ radio guys to realize the Falcons were out of timeouts).

I’m considering that call karmic retribution for the Chad Lavalais/Jeremiah Trotter fight game in 2005 and I’m happy for an important win, but having seen the Eagles blow games in a vast array of mind-boggling and terrible fashions over the years, I know how you guys feel and I’m sorry you got screwed like that.

Matt Ryan looks like the real deal — i was really impressed. Good luck the rest of the season, and please knock the Panthers down a few pegs.

Time's yours, Andy.

by BrianS on Oct 27, 2008 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The bad call......

You can say you want to place blame on Jennings. He does suck monkey butt and he plays returns scared. He should not be out there. He did not touch the ball though, so the call is nowhere near his fault.

Blaming the coaching staff because they called a timeout is assinine. He was making sure he had more ticks of the clock before the 2 minute warning. Ryan has shown that he can stop the clock when he needs to, so the coaching staff had confidence in his ability to do so.

The refs are the ones at fault here. Someone made the point that the refs have caused a lot of issues with bad calls this year and you are right. I really don’t know if they are blind, are scrubs, are new, are thinking football is soccer, or what, but they are pretty bad this year. There had to be more than one ref with his eyes on the play there and someone should have caught the call.

Yes, the Falcons could have pulled this one out in the last minutes. If they can do it in 11 seconds they certainly could have done in it over 2 minutes. Did the refs hand Philly the game? Maybe, but if they punched the TD in with a run instead of the interception, where would they have been? It really does suck. They played tough and deserved the win even if Philly seemed more in control of the game. Philly wasn’t doing too bad on moving the ball on our D. Even if we did score, there was no sure way t say we would have stopped them before they got a field goal.

Let’s face it, the Falcons have a poor run offensive line(They protect Ryan’s butt on passing plays though) and our run D is pretty bad. The secondary is young by a long shot, but they played pretty good. Westbrook killed us and Turner never got rolling. You can’t blame them for these things though. When you clean house and rebuild, you only have so much spackle to patch up the holes in one season.

The Falcons are a better team than the NFL is giving them credit for and they played their hearts out today(except the D after that muffed punt call). Sad to see them lose, but still happy to be a Falcons fan.
