Holy farbing shaz (edited)
Let just start with one stat before I get lost in emotion.
Matt Ryan was 6-6 on 3rd & 9 and longer today.
Call me high on the thrill, but that is the kind of shit that the great ones are made of. I can't even start to explain how I feel about todays game. In fact this entire weekend of NFL action was the most exciting in a VERY VERY long time.
From SI.com:
In the last 8 minutes, there was a goal-line stand by the Falcons, an 85-yard kickoff return by Atlanta's Jerious Norwood , Elam's first missed field goal in 31 attempts, a gutty drive by the Bears that culminated with Kyle Orton 's touchdown pass to Rashied Davis with 11 seconds remaining and, finally, Elam's winning kick after Ryan hooked up with Michael Jenkins on a 26-yard completion.
Matty Ice earned his nickname today.
This is a team that refused to throw in the towel. This is a team whose main weapon (who was leading the league in rushing) got pretty much shut down today. A team that 6 weeks into the season is way in the thick of it. A team that is coming off of one of the hugest regular season wins in team history. A team that is 4-2 going into a bye.
Alright, I have to stop typing now as I am still trying to soak it all in.

Sorry
that you can’t scrounge up a little enthusiasm for our Falcons, runningback! Hope you got to see the game, it was a treat.
The years have taught me to tamp down expectations for the Falcons, but THIS year is getting truly exciting. I’ve seen many Falcons teams that were one-year wonders (weren’t they all?), but not since the LeBaron-Bennett era 30 years ago have I gotten such a positive sense that there are great things ahead for this franchise, in the long term.
When a (rebuilding) team has limited talent, you can’t compete unless you play smart and make the most of your personnel. The Falcons have done exactly that so far; look how our penalties and turnovers are way down, great coaching! We’re actually using players in roles that maximize their abilities. Look how the players are motivated! I don’t see anybody dogging it or otherwise giving up, ever! How’s that for a refreshing change of pace? Not to mention a few fine young men that appear to be awesome pickups in free agency and the draft.
Logic and history still warn me to tread cautiously, but it’s getting really hard, and I LOVE IT!!! It kind of sucks to have a bye week coming up, the way it’s going.
Sorry to ramble like a Unabomber Manifesto there. Damn, I’m going to sleep well tonight. Cheers!

Matt Ryan has giant balls.
“Chicago’s decision to squib the ensuing kickoff backfired when Harry Douglas’ 10-yard return gave the Falcons possession at their 44-yard line with six seconds left. The field position prompted offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey to change a desperation play call that wide receiver Michael Jenkins said involved "pitching the ball around and trying to get downfield.”
Mularkey instead called double corner routes designed to put the Falcons in position for a long field goal. Before relaying Mularkey’s orders, Ryan did something else you wouldn’t expect from a 23-year-old.
“He comes in the huddle and says, ’We’re going to win this game,’ " Falcons wide receiver Roddy White said.”

Dear Matt Ryan: I owe you a HUGE apology. I'm sorry. Love, iRonin.

Can't blame dah Bears
for the squib kick, they were probably thinking ‘kick away from Norwood’ and neglected Douglas. Harry stepped up pretty big receiving too, 5 catches for 96 yards.
With 11 seconds to work with, it’s very possible that Douglas’ 10 yards gave us the field position we needed to win the game. IMO we have a nice battle for #2 between Douglas and Jenkins now.

Oh man
I literally got chills when I read that. I mean, I hate to say it, but there were a lot of Matty Ice haters out there. I gotta say, I feel AMAZING about NOT drafting Dorsey. I won’t say I told you so. At least not explicitly. You former haters know who you are. It’s OK though, Matty Ice forgives and forgets.

Still...
I think the issue with the Ryan pick wasn’t that he was a crappy pick, but the idea of taking a QB with #3 overall. We all knew that taking a QB was a “high risk/high reward” gamble. I think most people’s, or at least, my problem was that we were putting all our eggs in one unproven basket.
Clearly, the gamble paid off, but I don’t think it makes it any less of a gamble. Make no mistake, I wouldn’t trade Ryan for ten Glenn Dorseys, or for anyone else in that draft for that matter. We were worried that the FO was making publicity decision that didn’t fully appreciate the risks for the future of the franchise. Clearly all the gambles paid off though. Sam Baker is a monster. Matt Ryan did the one thing I really wanted to see him do: win a game without a 1000 yard rusher. Curtis Lofton looks good. Harry Douglas was a steal.
Our hate wasn’t necessarily about Ryan. It was about a high QB pick. But I tell you what, when I read that, I knew we had a QB. Imagine the trust everyone in that huddle has to have for Ryan, after such a bold statement that he made come true. Wow. Just wow.
Dear Matt Ryan: I owe you a HUGE apology. I'm sorry. Love, iRonin.

Matt Ryan says
that he appreciates your kind words, but he’s not speaking to you until you change that avatar. It makes his ears look WAY too big.

Look...
That avatar is the nicest compliment in the world.
Some of the best QB’s to ever play the game were horse-faced.
1.) John Elway. Dude looked like Mr. Ed.
2.) Peyton Manning.
and now…
3.) Matt Ryan.
So there you have, a tradition of greatness.
Dear Matt Ryan: I owe you a HUGE apology. I'm sorry. Love, iRonin.

Just a matter of perspective
When you put it that way, Ryan is indeed following in some exalted footsteps (or should I say hoofprints), isn’t he?
You had me at ‘Elway’. He and Mr. Ed are definitely a ‘separated at birth’ pair if ever there was one. Cheers!

Shannon Sharpe
Let’s not forget that horse faces also make for good tight ends occasionally. Coincidence that he AND Elway played for the BRONCOS? I think not.

Hate to do it
But I’m going to try to tamp down the egregious profanity on the front page, and thus you find your headline Falconized. Sorry for any inconvenience.
And holy hockey sticks, was that a game. Did you get to watch it?

Glad you were able to do that. I was totally out of my mind with joy and rather exuberant. Will try to keep the cursing to the Johnny Dangerously level. Didn’t mean to be a farging icehole.

Good win
and I have to agree with iRonin on the basis of my opinion with the Ryan pick. I would go into it, but I don’t see the point with all that has already been stated.
Also, Dave, you might have edited the headline of the post, but the link remains the same, which I find hilarious.

So there I was...
Yelling bloody obscenities at those mongrols who call themselves my friends (aka Carolina Panthers fans) when i turn to the TV in mid-sentence only to see Christmas in October. Michael Jenkins catching (and i repeat catching) a beautiful pass getting both feet in bounds and stopping the clock with 1 second remaining. It was like something out of the movies. Amazing. Absolutely amazing. Or in the Words of our illustrious blog leader: HOLY FARBING SHAZ!!!!
That was one of the best ending games I have seen in a long, long time. I would have to agree with a couple of statements here, first, iRonin’s assessment must be correct about Matt Ryan. That quote. Awesome. Truly. Second, i’m in agreement with Jesse28 the fact that the link still is the same is pretty farbing hilarious in its own right.
Go Falcons, this win is HUGE!
If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother.

Hours later...
…still the same, therefore must proclaim:

I gave it a point-five for the post heading being edited. Haha, just poking with ya Dave.
Also, I stayed at home this morning so I could catch the highlights on Sportscenter and was almost late to work. I wanted to mention this because watching Ryan make that throw reminded me of a comment I made on here somwhere earlier about how a lot of things revolving around Ryan at the time of the draft stoked up memories of things revolving around Favre when he was drafted by the Falcons. Strong arm but throws too many INTs and if that throw didn’t look Favre-esque I’m not sure much else will. Favre never had the best WR’s and he always made them look better than they are. Our guys aren’t the best but Ryan is consistently putting them in positions to look damn good.
So, fine Dave and James, I’ll let the Hall and draft slide firmly into the ’good decision making" dept. by The Comrade and company, although some of the later rounds still puzzle me. The jury is still out for me on Crumps though because I believe that the arguements made for that move could have been applied to Brooking just as easily, but w/e for now.

Later rounds
I still totally agree with you on the late round picks; if they weren’t even thinking about keeping Zinger and Fontenot, why did they bother draft them? I think there were positions of need that were greater than that.
That said, the season will shake out and show us where we’re at. Love the debate around here, though.

Hoist a Pint of Bier...Mann, it salute for J. Anderson
Along the lines of questionable picks in the draft, anyone have anything to say about our drinking buddy? I’ve thought that he has played well as a situational pass rushers?
Also, lost in the wonderful joy that was this victory heading into the bye week. DId anyone notice Jamaal Anderson’s first sack? Or the way the Falcons then sacked him?
If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother.

Anderson
I know he gets a lot of flack, but he has really been coming on for a few weeks now. Even though he hasnt been landing sacks, he has been managing to apply more pressure than in the past. I can think of a few rushes by him in the Kansas City game alone that led to hurried throws and incompletions. It was great seeing him finally have a big game yesterday. A sack, two more tackles for loss, and two pass breakups is the kind of production I could live with from him. He is doing stuff that doesn’t have stats, but still help the team. For example, there were several running plays yesterday where he got off his block and plugged the hole that Forte was looking for. Forte got forced back across the line and wasnt’ able to gain much. Anderson didn’t get credit for anything, but he made the play.
We have to remember, he has only been playing defensive end for four years now. He was a project from the word go. Expectations were a bit unreasonable for him last year, and a lot of people were very premature in playing the bust card. This year, he has shown to be very good against the run with pass rush skills developing nicely. His play against the run has been so impressive, I wouldn’t be entirely against putting about 20 pounds on him in the offseason and moving him to DT.

Re: Anderson
I still think you can play the bust card. I mean I agree he has done a lot that hasn’t been registerd on the Stat sheet, I am still convinced however that he must do more and he still has the rest of the season to do that. But for what we gave up for him we have a right to scrutinize what he does for the money we game him and the draft pick we used.

I loved that..
…the rest of the team basically mobbed him like he won the lottery or something. Good day for Jam. I think he might have had a a batted down pass or two as well.
