Atlanta Falcons vs. Chicago Bears Open Thread

56452225_medium

via cache.gettyimages.com

Hey, we're 3-2!

For the Falcons to match or exceed 90% of "expert" predictions for the season by getting to four wins, they'll have to roll past the Bears. This may be their toughest opponent yet, a potent team with a great defense and a workable offense.

As such, we'll need to project all our good feelings at the Falcons and similar blah blah blah. I'll see you all in the comments, after the jump.

Star-divide

Who? Atlanta Falcons vs. Chicago Bears, 1 p.m. ET

Where? Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia

Weather? Hopefully loud with a chance of intimidation, but no weather in a dome.

Fun Fact? The Bears have defeated the Falcons in each of their last three meetings. That's a fact, but I'm not sure it's fun.

Injuries? WR Laurent Robinson is out again, and WR Roddy White is hurting and probably 50/50 to play. DT Grady Jackson, DT Jason Jefferson and TE Justin Peelle are all questionable or worse, as is C Todd McClure. The Bears are likely without top receiver Brandon Lloyd, and CB Nathan Vasher is also questionable.

Odds? Chicago over Atlanta 3.0, Over/Under 43.5

Foe? That'd be WCG of Windy City Gridiron, who ably covers the Ursus(es?). Be sure to check him out on Sunday as you tune in to the game.

GO FALCONS! Let's maul these Bears!

WOOT

I get to see my first Falcon game of the season. Portland Oregon has finally felt the need to televise the game. GO Falcons GO.

Roddy White

He may get double teamed a lot today, but it looks like he’s still able to get open.

Roddy White

on a slant to the Chicago 34, overcomes the Blalock penalty.

Jenkins

Two catches already. He could have a big day with the team focusing on Turner/White/anyone but Jenkins.

Ryan

nice running completion to Jenkins at the 15.

Field goal

Elam perfect from short range, Falcons up 3-0. We’ll need more than field goals to win this one, though.

When Douglas comes in the game

you can’t run a trick play/reverse to Douglas every time. Wonder if he has blocking issues?

"There's no such word as 'quit' in swamp buggy racing, Marigold"

by tom slick on Oct 12, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why not throw to him?

If we want him to be able to see what he can do, why not give him the ball the way you would any other receiver? We’re down L-Rob to begin with…let’s see what he can do.

The blocking thing

is the only reason I can think of. These coaches seem to value that very highly.

...

Easy there, that’s a little crazy. Let’s just worry about getting him to #2 now… I’m all for a confidence boost for him, but it wasn’t an athletic sack, the play broke down, and he was in the right place at the right time.

Dear Matt Ryan: Don't eff this up. Love, iRonin.

by iRonin on Oct 12, 2008 2:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All I mean is

That lack of a sack was clearly bothering him, as it should have. With one under his belt, he can at least play a little looser—and hell, I’d take him getting a few more tackles.

No matter how much money

you make, human confidence can be a fragile thing. Hope this is an omen of better days for him. It would be absolutely huge for this team if he suddenly blossoms like Roddy did.

Take your pick...

I urge cautious optimism in the form of two quotes:

Bill Parcells: Let’s not put him in Canton just yet, boys.
Harvey “Wolfe” Keitel: Let’s not start sucking each others CENSORED just yet boys.

… Just saying. I’ll feel better when I can see #2 is all. But I’m as thrilled as everyone else for him to get #1

I'm sorry

I’m sorry, but let’s have a little talk about something.

When was the last time you had faith Atlanta could get a 3rd and long? Seriously. I never felt that way under Vick. Certainly not last season. I have been skeptical about it all season long, but what are we seeing here? Against the BEARS no less.

The other thing, I never had faith Atlanta could score in the redzone, until after they had done so. I hope we see further improvement in this area.

Dear Matt Ryan: Don't eff this up. Love, iRonin.

by iRonin on Oct 12, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So..

That’s what makes me feel so optimistic about this team. Starting to believe that the drive isn’t over at 3rd and 8.

Dear Matt Ryan: Don't eff this up. Love, iRonin.

by iRonin on Oct 12, 2008 2:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Red zone

We have to improve there, but the way this team is moving the ball impresses the hell out of me. When I finally meet Ryan in person, I’m going to buy the guy a beer for criticizing the pick. He’s certainly exceeded any reasonable expectations so far.

by Dave the Falconer on Oct 12, 2008 2:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Coaching competence

helps a lot. They’re putting Ryan in a position to succeed. The passing game was so mercurial with Vick at QB too.

I feel like we're a few pieces away

My take:

New C, McClure is getting old, we need a new face to go ahead and begin getting in sync.
New RT, Clabo is a great backup.
New TE, we won’t pursue a pure pass-catcher, but someone more balanced than Hartsock, and move Peele to backup.
New DT, gotta get some pressure.
New RE, maybe. Amazing, Anderson gets one sack, and a couple of bats, and I’m on the bandwagon.
New S, probably FS and SS, nothing particularly nasty, but Coleman eats PA fakes constantly and Milloy is probably gone.
New Returner. Adam Jennings needs to go ahead and retire.
