Mike Singletary Hearts The Falcons

In a move that automatically makes him the frontrunner, Mike Singletary announced that he'd actually like to coach the Falcons:

"Sure I would -- absolutely," the San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach said by phone when asked if he would like the job. "The one thing I've learned is it's hard to become a head coach. But I feel I'm ready now. I know I'm ready."

There's also word that Blank is prepared to put the full court press on Singletary. Barring something completely unforeseen, you can pencil in Singles as the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

As I believe I've previously indicated, I'm cool with this. From all indications, he's a great guy, a talented defensive thinker and not the kind of guy who scuttles sideways to a college 3/4ths of the way through the season. In short, he's an inoffensive hire who will have to be augmented by a talented offensive coordinator. Blank will be making a splash with a big name coach, but from a purely talent standpoint I think he could've tried for a bigger home run with someone like Jason Garrett or Josh McDaniels.

Anyway you slice it, it's just nice to be wanted.

I like it
Sure he wouldn't be my first choice, but I do agree that this would be a solid hire.

I have been telling everyone I know that the Falcons would be idiots to hire a coordinator, unless it was Singletary.  I think he would have no issue getting respect from the players and I think that's what the Falcons need.  Not just a playbook, but someone to right the ship from a player/coach relationship POV.

Let's matriculate the ball down the field boys.

I'll take it, that's for sure.
I have stated previously that Mike Singletary is my number one candidate for the job and I hope that ends up being the result of the fiasco that is the head coaching job of my beloved Falcons.  I went back and read his entire profile at profootballhof.com and I keep coming to the same conclusion I always do in that this guy could really connect with the players, not just because he himself was a player, but more because of what kind of player he was, a very high profile Hall of Fame player.  He knows what it takes to get to and win a Superbowl.  I could go on and on about what I like about Singletary but I would simply be repeating myself.

I do want to express my feeling about some of the others being mentioned as candidates, specifically Garrett.  Personally, I think he is overrated.  Yes, he is doing a fine job in Dallas, but really, how much of that is because of the overall talent at the skill positions and how much do you really believe is all because of him?  Romo, T.O., Barber against what, Redman, White, and Dunn?  T.O. is T.O. and he is going to get his regardless of where he plays, who's at QB, or who's calling the shots, head coach or OC.  And because of this, don't you think that he really opens things up for the other WR's such as Patton and for the running game and Barber?  That's not to take away anything from Barber because I love him.  Clearly Garrett is an idiot for playing Jones as much as Petrino was playing Dunn over Norwood.  But that's a separate argument for another time.

Back to the point.  T.O. clearly changes the game and makes it an easy day for any OC.  No, I'm not saying that being an OC in the NFL is an easy thing to do, but you have to admit that when you have T.O. on your side of the ball that it does simplify things for you a lot faster than Jenkins and White.  So, what I am simply trying to state is that if you take that same OC and put him on a team with much less talent you can bet your bottom dollar that you will not get the same results.  Take that talent and pair it with any other OC though, and the results will be similar if not the same.

Also, can someone talk the TV networks to play Falcons games over the Jacksonville Gag-uars down here in Jacksonville, Fl?  I mean seriously, they can't even sell out a home game for a playoff bound team here and the games get blacked out every weekend.  I know, it's impossible to get Falcons games over the home team, but I can dream right?
